New Restaurants Planned for Central

A new Raising Canes will soon be going up at the corner of Sullivan Rd and Wax Rd. The new restaurant will be a large sit-down interior restaurant like the recently constructed ones in Denham Springs on Range Ave near I-12 and on S. Sherwood Forest Blvd at I-12. Of course, it will still have a drive-thru. The location at Greenwell Springs & Sullivan will eventually be closed. The new location should be open by the end of the year.

Also, Rocco’s New Orleans Po-boys will be opening up a location in Central. The location has not yet been established. Rocco’s currently has locations on Drusilla Lane and in Prairieville.

Signs and City Lines Discussed at City Council

The Central City Council convened Tuesday evening, July 22nd, for its regular meeting at 6:00 at Kristenwood. The first of two major issues discussed was an amendment to the city’s sign ordinance. The original ordinance has been available on the Central City web page at the link: Sign Ordinance. Several minor changes were made and the proposed new ordinance was unanimously approved. The other item which generated a great deal of discussion was a petition by property owners north of Hwy 64 and west of Blackwater Road who seek to be de-annexed from the City of Central. It seems that this handful of property owners are included in the City of Central but not included in the Central Community School District. It needs to be understood that the annexation of the City and the creation of the School District were unrelated actions. While there seems to have been no intention to single out this tract of land for dual treatment, the owners still have a dilemna and are doing the right thing by bringing their petitions to the Council for consideration. The Council has directed the city’s attorney to research the issue and report to the Council what the correct and legal process should be to handle this petition.

Fun Activities This Week at the Library

This week, there is more than reading going on at the library. The Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch Library is hosting several events over the next week for the children and young adults in the area. Teens will definitely be interested in the Anime Afternoon on Thursday, July 24. From 2:00 to 4:00 PM, there will be Anime games like Jeopardy and chopstick contests. At Tacky Tape Treasures, teens are invited to come make cool stuff using duct tape, something fun and inexpensive with a ton of possibilities. That happens from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 29. Lastly, for all of the kids ages 11 and younger, there will be a Reading Party at the Greenwell Springs Branch on Monday, July 28. CHS Band Camps Begin Soon

The Central High Band begins preparations on July 28th for the 2008 football season. Percussion Camp is held all week, July 28 through August 1, from 1 to 5 PM at Central High School. The following Monday the entire band, which includes the Silks and Kittens, joins the well rehearsed and very tired percussion section for three days of intensive full Band Camp from 8 AM until 4 PM August 4th through 6th. As I recall the Band was undefeated during the 2007 football season, going a perfect 10-0. I am certain their record will be similar in 2008.
