This week, there is more than reading going on at the library. The Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch Library is hosting several events over the next week for the children and young adults in the area. Teens will definitely be interested in the Anime Afternoon on Thursday, July 24. From 2:00 to 4:00 PM, there will be Anime games like Jeopardy and chopstick contests. On Saturday, July 26, young adults who are into dance can learn some stepping moves at Stepping with Tanisha from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. At Tacky Tape Treasures, teens are invited to come make cool stuff using duct tape, something fun and inexpensive with a ton of possibilities. That happens from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 29. Lastly, for all of the kids ages 11 and younger, there will be a Reading Party at the Greenwell Springs Branch on Monday, July 28. Children are invited to come celebrate reading as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program. The event begins at 6:30 PM.

The Central High Band begins preparations on July 28th for the 2008 football season. Percussion Camp is held all week, July 28 through August 1, from 1 to 5 PM at Central High School. The following Monday the entire band, which includes the Silks and Kittens, joins the well rehearsed and very tired percussion section for three days of intensive full Band Camp from 8 AM until 4 PM August 4th through 6th. As I recall the Band was undefeated during the 2007 football season, going a perfect 10-0. I am certain their record will be similar in 2008.

The Central School System suffered a loss tonight with a failure to pass Proposition 1 and 2. Here are the results:
Proposition 1: 2732 For – 3415 Against
Proposition 2: 2440 For – 3691 Against
After the results, Superintendent Michael Faulk said, “When you take a journey, there will be bumps in the road. This is just one of those bumps. We will still have one of the most successful school systems in the state. School starts in three weeks.”
School board member Russell Starns comments, “Stay positive. It’s a bad economy; gas is $4.00 a gallon. We’ve gotten where we are by working hard. We just have to go back to the drawing board.”
