The wonderful teachers at Bellingrath Hills used the recent hurricane activity in Louisiana to teach our students about extreme weather, hurricane preparedness, and how to express their feelings about their individual experiences in writing. The students were also exposed to weather information found on the internet, television, and newspapers.
Although most classes will study weather indepth later in the year, our teachers used the last couple of weeks as an opportunity to link the everyday experiences of our students with their studies.
After sweeping their first two games to open the tournament, the Lady Wildcats took no time to win the pool. Central’s JV team beat Redemptorist JV to clinch first place. First up in the bracket was the Brusly Lady Panthers. The Lady Wildcats led by Whitney East (5 kills) dominated early and completed the victory with 25-12 and 25-11 wins. The semifinal game was a tough one against eventual tournament champion Lutcher. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out early, and the Wildcats put up a fight, but Lutcher took the sets 10-25 and 19-25. Next up for the Wildcats was the consolation match against district 5-5A rival Denham Springs. The first set was a battle and Central came out on top 25-23. Denham took advantage of several Wildcat miscues and took the second set 19-25. The third and tiebreak set was a fierce battle between the two rivals. Sarah Zito’s strong presence at the net (4 blocks), along with serving from Dylan Wilson helped the Wildcats clinch third place with a hard fought 19-17 victory.
The Lady Wildcats are 4-1 and will face Baton Rouge High Monday at 5:00 in the Wildcat gym.
As anticipated, large numbers of adult “Hurricane Gustav” pest mosquitoes made their appearance last night. Populations of several other pest species resulting from the rain events associated with Hurricane Gustav will continue to increase over the next few days. The EBRPMARC airplane and two aircraft contracted from Vector Disease Control, Incorporated sprayed much of the parish last night to reduce populations of pest mosquitoes. The EBRPMARC airplane and the two aircraft from VDCI will spray the remainder of the parish tonight, weather permitting.
It is very important that citizens dump water filled containers around their homes to reduce populations of the Asian Tiger Mosquito and the Southern House Mosquito. Unlike the pest mosquito species currently targeted by the aircraft, these two mosquito species do not fly far and develop in water filled containers around homes and businesses. The immature aquatic stages develop slower than the pest mosquito species we are spraying for now and we anticipate that very large numbers of adult Asian Tiger Mosquitoes and Southern House Mosquitoes will begin to emerge from water filled containers around homes Thursday night if citizens do not dump the water. The Asian Tiger Mosquito is a day time biter and the Southern House Mosquito likes to bite inside homes late at night.
Eggs of other pest mosquito species will begin to hatch as floodwaters recede along bayous, rivers and streams and those species will begin to emerge over the next two to three weeks. So the battle will continue for the some time. Currently mosquito abatement personnel are treating large blocks to control mosquitoes and are unable to make individual service requests.

As part of the implementation of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) in Central Community Schools this year, Central Middle School has adopted several behavioral incentive systems. One of these incentives provides positive recognition each month for students “Caught Being Great” by going above and beyond in some way. These students are nominated by other students, and these nominations are collected and screened by homeroom teachers all month long. During the week of “PBS Friday”, which is a monthly celebration of positive behavior occurring on the last Friday of each month, each team of teachers goes through all the students’ nominations and selects the most outstanding ones for the “Caught Being Great” student to represent their team that month.
