It Pays to Be Safe

Jansen Browning, seventh grade student at St. Alphonsus, was selected as one of 13 young folks to have his artistic interpretation of safety published in the ExxonMobil Annual Safety Calendar.  Each year youth are encouraged to participate in this high-profile event.  A panel of judges evaluates the multitude of entries and selects the top drawings outlining several critical areas of safety.  In addition to having the picture included in the annual calendar which is distributed to employees, family members, and the general community, Jansen received a cash prize for his winning entry.

Congratulations, Jansen!

Just Say No Club

St. Alphonsus Just Say No Club members recently held their first meeting of the new school year.  The club is open to 4th-8th grade students and has been viable for 19 years.  Focus is placed on making these young students aware of the dangers and pitfalls of drugs, tobacco and alcohol through education, socialization and service to others.  A school-wide Red Ribbon Week Campaign is held in October, and the entire student body assembles to see skits and hear guest speakers provide them with useful and helpful information relative to making the right choices to remain safe.

New club member, Karly Bordelon, wrote the following to share her thoughts about the Just Say No Club with her fellow schoolmates and club members:

Just say no!

Understand how drugs can hurt you.

Stay away from drugs.

Talk with your parents.

Share info with your friends.

Always make good choices.

You can do anything if you’re drug free.

Never agree to even try drugs.

One chance…don’t do it!

Club moderators are Sr. Sandra Blanchard and Ms. Tanya Graves.

City Council Approves Reserve Police Officers & Delays Bellingrath Expansion

The Central City Council met Tuesday evening and gave approval for five Central residents with law enforcement experience to become reserve police officers working for Doug Browning as Central Police officers. They donate their time but have all of the authority of any full time officer. Our new officers are Jeff Behrnes, Gene Cobb, Shane Evans, Gene Hebert & Gordon Hutchinson.

There was then an extensive discussion regarding another filing to build houses in Bellingrath. The contentious issue was the concept of a street proposed to join the new development with Bellingrath Lakes. Ultimately, the Council sent the zoning request back to the developer to regroup and come up with an alternate request.

The video of the entire Council meeting can be seen in the screen below.
