“Children have a love for Christ. This is evident in even the six-year olds I teach. My faith is the most important thing in my life, and I am honored to teach at a school where Christian values are alive”. Allyson Gremillion Jones, once a student and now a teacher here at St. Alphonsus, is enthusiastic and passionate in professing why she returned to her alma mater to teach our first grade students. Ms. Jones attended St. Alphonsus from 1985 – 1994. She is a graduate of Central High School and LSU. Please join us in welcoming her to our faculty. We are blessed to have Ms. Jones as part of our faith community.

St. Alphonsus Pre-Kindergarten students are transitioned into a structured day almost immediately upon beginning school. These little folks may be small in stature, but they carry a big load in that they have many things they must learn and master throughout the school year.
Because this is the first time for some of our students to experience time in a formal classroom, many of the activities take place in learning centers. The centers are designed to promote social interaction, eye/hand coordination, dexterity, recognition skills, math concepts and artistic expression and creativity.
Our pre-kindergarten program now hosts several learning centers which include the picnic center, a workshop center, a town center, a neighborhood center, a puzzle center, a reading center, an art center, and a computer center. In these centers, children learn to recognize familiar community figures such as firemen and policemen and community buildings such as hospitals and churches and discuss the importance of these in everyday life. Additional benefits of the centers include original art work displays, application of social and practical life skills, role play and hands on instruction in the use and importance of the computer in our society in today’s world.
Ms. Joy Lonibos and Ms. Jennell Amorello are dedicated to the care and education of these precious students. We are blessed and fortunate to have them molding the lives of these youngsters who will one day be leaders in our community.

Volunteers needed: We are looking for volunteers to donate and build two small ramps for our Preschool storage buildings. These buildings store our tricycles for our little ones. Our teachers are having to physically pick them up to load and unload them everyday. If you are willing to volunteer, please email Patti Birdsall at pbirdsall@centralcss.org or call the school.
We are also in need of volunteers to donate and bring in loads of dirt for two of our t buildings. When it rains, the water drains under the t building and stays there. If you can help us with this matter, please email Jean Young at jyoung@centralcss.org.

The Lady Wildcats are in the top 15, but you can’t win them all. The team lost a 3-2, heartbreaker to district 3-5A rival Denham Springs. Central won the first match 25-16, but were unable to stop the Lady Jackets in games 2 and 3, losing 25-16. The Lady Wildcats bounced back in the 4th game and won 25-16 to force a deciding game 5. The Jackets were able to take control early and put away the Lady Wildcats 15-8 for the win. The Wildcats are now 20-5, 6-4 in district and stand in third place.

Following Hurricane Gustav, St. Alphonsus students assisted their parents and other family members in clean-up efforts to make their school campus ready for re-opening. These young men helped picking up limbs, removing a damaged awning from the middle school buildings, sweeping the parking lot and sprucing up the playground for our kindergarteners. Thanks, guys! You are appreciated.

Pictured is Miss Jennifer Gremillion, 5th grade teacher, handing out supplies to one of her students, Tristan Stewart. Jennifer is new to our staff, but familiar with St. Alphonsus school. In addition to being a parishioner, she was a student here, having attended her elementary years during the late 90’s. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Academy and then Southeastern Louisiana University with a degree Elementary Education, Jennifer aspired to returning to her elementary alma mater so she could give to back students the quality education she received her as a youngster.
Please join us in welcoming Jennifer as part of our faculty. We are fortunate and blessed to have her as part of our faith community and school.

Earlier this summer our school acquired some bookcases and other materials from Starkey Academy. Without a moment’s hesitation, when called upon, our Men’s Club answered our plea for help in getting these items moved to our St. Alphonsus campus. The next phase of this project entailed refurbishing the bookcases with a fresh coat of paint. Again, this ministry was called into action when requested and provided the necessary resources to get the job done. We are blessed to have such a group of dedicated and devoted individuals in our midst here in the St. Alphonsus Faith Community. Our sincere thanks and appreciation for all they do is extended to each and every one of these special people.
