Central Football Suffers First Loss, 34-31 to Scotlandville

In a game marked by big plays on turnovers and penalties, the Wildcats moved to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in district.  In the first two minutes of the game the Hornets turned the ball over twice deep in their own territory, leading to short scoring drives by Central and a score of 15-0.  Later in the half Central blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety.  In all, Scotlandville lost two punts, a fumble and had a punt and an extra point blocked while Central threw one interception.

The final story was told as Scotlandville, aided by two huge pass interferance penalties, drove 70 yards beginning with less than 6 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter to go ahead 3 points.  Central’s next posession ended with an incompletion at midfield.   Then with 6 seconds remaining Central got one last shot from their own 29 and fell short on a completed pass “hook and ladder” play.

Central is still in control of its own destiny the next two Friday nights.  First, undefeated Denham comes to Wildcat stadium next Friday on Halloween.  Then Central travels to meet Catholic at Memorial Stadium the following Friday.  Wins in these two games will assure Central of at least a tie for first place in the district.

Welcome Back, Mrs. Jones

“Children have a love for Christ.  This is evident in even the six-year olds I teach. My faith is the most important thing in my life, and I am honored to teach at a school where Christian values are alive”.  Allyson Gremillion Jones, once a student and now a teacher here at St. Alphonsus, is enthusiastic and passionate in professing why she returned to her alma mater to teach our first grade students.  Ms. Jones attended St. Alphonsus from 1985 – 1994.  She is a graduate of Central High School and LSU.   Please join us in welcoming her to our faculty.   We are blessed to have Ms. Jones as part of our faith community.

Pre-Kindergarten – Small Steps and Giant Leaps

St. Alphonsus Pre-Kindergarten students are transitioned into a structured day almost immediately upon beginning school.  These little folks may be small in stature, but they carry a big load in that they have many things they must learn and master throughout the school year.

Because this is the first time for some of our students to experience time in a formal classroom, many of the activities take place in learning centers.  The centers are designed to promote social interaction, eye/hand coordination, dexterity, recognition skills, math concepts and artistic expression and creativity.

Our pre-kindergarten program now hosts several learning centers which include the picnic center, a workshop center, a town center, a neighborhood center, a puzzle center, a reading center, an art center, and a computer center.   In these centers, children learn to recognize familiar community figures such as firemen and policemen and community buildings such as hospitals and churches and discuss the importance of these in everyday life.  Additional benefits of the centers include original art work displays, application of social and practical life skills, role play and hands on instruction in the use and importance of the computer in our society in today’s world.

Ms. Joy Lonibos and Ms. Jennell Amorello are dedicated to the care and education of these precious students.  We are blessed and fortunate to have them molding the lives of these youngsters who will one day be leaders in our community.

Bellingrath needs your help!

Volunteers needed: We are looking for volunteers to donate and build two small ramps for our Preschool storage buildings. These buildings store our tricycles for our little ones. Our teachers are having to physically pick them up to load and unload them everyday. If you are willing to volunteer, please email Patti Birdsall at pbirdsall@centralcss.org or call the school.

We are also in need of volunteers to donate and bring in loads of dirt for two of our t buildings. When it rains, the water drains under the t building and stays there. If you can help us with this matter, please email Jean Young at jyoung@centralcss.org.

Helping Hands

Following Hurricane Gustav, St. Alphonsus students assisted their parents and other family members in clean-up efforts to make their school campus ready for re-opening. These young men helped picking up limbs, removing a damaged awning from the middle school buildings, sweeping the parking lot and sprucing up the playground for our kindergarteners. Thanks, guys! You are appreciated.
