Fatality on Blackwater Road
A 23-year-old Zachary man was killed Thursday, October 8 when a pickup truck crashed into his
motorcycle on Blackwater Road south of Louisiana Highway 64, a spokesman with the
Louisiana State Police said.
The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. as Fredrick S. Spurgeon, 33, of Zachary, was
driving a 2001 Dodge pickup truck north on Blackwater Road, Trooper Russell G.
Graham II said.
Spurgeon tried to pull into a private driveway by making a left turn into the path
of Jeremy W. Hewitt, who was driving a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, Graham said.
The motorcycle hit the front of the pickup, ran off the right side of the road and
landed in a ditch, Graham said. Hewitt was thrown from the motorcycle and taken to
Ochsner Medical Center-Baton Rouge, where he later died.
Troopers believe speed might have been a factor in the crash, but no one has been
arrested, Graham said.
