Central Needs Our Own Zip Code

By  |

mailbox1Central currently is part of several different zip codes, including the Zachary zip code, Pride, Greenwell Springs, Baker, and Baton Rouge. This causes several issues for Central, including occasional mistakes made in sales tax distribution to the city. With its own zip code, the possibility of Central’s mail order sales taxes going to any other city would be virtually eliminated. Problems also come up when trying to establish population counts for the city, as the many different zip codes can incorrectly alter census data. Having our own zip code would further promote Central’s status as its own city.

Councilman Bill Cassidy has made a request for Central to have its own zip code. However, the United States Postal Service is hesitating to grant the request before getting an accurate assessment of how many Central residents actually want their own zip code. A petition has been created to gather signatures of those who support the zip code change. Central leaders want the change to happen before the next U.S. Census. All petitions will be due by December 15 in an effort to meet this deadline.
