6th Annual Gold Star Mothers Luncheon

By  |

The Gold Star Mothers are mothers of those soldiers who have lost their lives in combat.  This group, along with the Blue Star Mothers, was one of the recipients of funds from this year's Cookin' in Central.  The children of these women have paid the ultimate price for our freedom, and each year, a luncheon is held for these mothers.  This year's Gold Star Mothers Luncheon was held last Saturday, May 1st at PARC 73 in Prairieville.  Pictured below are, left to right, Janet Broussard (EMR Support Specialist), Rex Kern (Director of the Port Hudson National Cemetery), Cathy Rushing (Gold Star Mother and Central resident whose son, Jared Crouch, was killed in action in Iraq), and Mayor Mac Watts.  In the photo, Mayor Watts is presenting a $4,000 check from Cookin' in Central to the Gold Star Mothers for a monument to be placed in the Port Hudson National Cemetery commemmorating all soldiers killed in action.

Also honored at this meeting was Mrs. Tiffany Villarreal, a Central resident. Mrs Villarreal is a teacher at Parkview Baptist School. This was the 2nd year her 8th grade honors class has presented a program for the Gold Star Mothers. The first year she had about 25 volunteers
to wear with the names of fallen service men form La. during the Mid-East wars. The names were embroidered on ties made by Mrs Villarreal’s mother,Corney Welsh. The list of volunteers grew to 75 this past year.

Central would do good to have a teacher like this.

Thank you to Central leaders and residents! Your support to our organization and our Gold Star Families have been tremendous. You are lucky to have a great Mayor as Mayor Watts! Also, I agree with the above comment, Mrs. Villarreal would definitely be an asset to your school system.

    Thank you again!

Mr. Welsh, I will also mention Mrs. Villarreal when this article appears in next week’s paper. Thank you for the additional info.
