School Board Retains Option to Receive Pay

The Central Community School Board voted 5-2 against a resolution not to allow School Board Members to receive compensation until Central teachers were paid as well as teachers in nearby school systems.  The resolution, brought by School Board Member Russell Starns and seconded by Member Marty Guilbeau, was supported by most of the citizens who spoke during public comment.  Several who spoke emphasized the message of support this action would send to Central's teachers.  Others pointed out that everything ever done to create the Central School System has been done by volunteers and that the School Board Members ran for these seats with the knowledge that these were not paying positions.  Two citizens spoke against the resolution, one maintaining that teachers choose to come to Central for benefits other than top pay.

This resolution does not result in the School Board Members being paid.  Had it passed, higher pay for teachers would have to be in place before the School Board could be paid.  With the defeat of this resolution the School Board has the option of voting to receive pay regardless of the compensation level of Central's teachers.  Voting against the resolution were School Board Members Browning, Easley, Foil, Gardner and Walker.  In favor of the resolution were Guilbeau and Starns.
