Local Consulting Arborist  Jimmy Culpepper  of Central recently conducted a crape myrtle pruning and general care workshop at the BREC Crape Myrtle Garden at Independence Park.  Culpepper urged participants to carefully consider the size and shape of the matured crape myrtle needed for an area before selecting and planting.  This results in a more satisfying landscape without having to keep it trimmed to make it fit.   Newer varieties of crape myrtles have also been developed that are more resistant to disease, requiring lower maintenance.
