At its annual conference in Lafayette, the Louisiana Library Association awarded the James O. Modisette Award to Central High School library in the City of Central. The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in a Louisiana school library program. The librarians are Patricia Bordelon and Leslie Smith.

Mrs. Bordelon became a library media specialist at Central High School in 2005.  Previously, she was a librarian at Tara High School for 12 years. She is most proud of the fact that so many students at Central are readers. Their futures are unlimited with this capability.

Mrs. Smith earned her MLIS from LSU in 2006.  Her first year of employment was at Capitol High School. She has been a librarian at Central High School since 2007. Mrs. Smith enjoys encouraging students to become lifelong readers and effective users of information.

The Central High School library has 80 Dell computers and 40 mobile laptops. Electronic resources include Microsoft Office software with Publisher capabilities, Cengage Learning’s Gale Infotrac, World Book Online, plus many other online sources used for research and reading. Electronic devices are popular, and students download research and books for pleasure. “Read to Succeed” involves all students as they participate in Accelerated Reader. Students have read 450,000,000 words so far this year.

The Central High School library is often filled to capacity with students reading, studying, using computers for class assignments, and browsing magazines. The librarians diligently work to provide a friendly environment where students and teachers are always welcome.
