Chartered in 2008, the Central Kiwanis Club hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped yet.  Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.  Since forming, Central’s Kiwanis Club has truly taken that mission to heart.

In 2009, the club held a drawing to purchase automatic defibrillators for each school in the Central School System.  To date, they club has donated 5 AEDs to Central Schools. These devices are used when someone suffers a heart attack or similar heart condition, and have been known to save many lives.  In 2010, a father picking his children up from school suffered a heart attack.  A nurse who was present used a Kiwanis-donated AED to save the man’s life

In 2010, Kiwanis developed the Terrific Kids Program.  The Terrific Kids Program honors those students who are Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable.  They are selected each quarter. Kiwanis gives each student a certificate, a button, and other prizes, along with placing their photograph on a bulletin board at school.  At the end of the year, Kiwanis sponsors a pizza party to honor the year’s Terrific Kids.

At the High School level, Kiwanis gives an annual Courtesy Award to graduating seniors, and also support the Key Club, a service club that is part of the Kiwanis family.

Central Kiwanis participated in the 2011 Citizen of the Year Awards by helping to judge the nominations, and has supported Cooking In Central for 3 years running.

In October 2010, Kiwanis sponsored the first Get Fit Central Day.  This event focusses on providing activities and information that can help our citizens live healthier lifestyles.   They raised money which went toward the purchase of playground equipment for both Bellingrath Hills and Tanglewood Elementary Schools.  A special appearance was put in by the LSU Track and Field team and coaching staff, who guided the students in the races and relays.  This year’s Get Fit Central will be held April 21 and will feature a 5K Walk/Run.  It will be held at Central Intermediate School and will begin at 7:30 a.m.  The 5K begins at 7:30 and the Walk at 8:30.  Kids’ competition relays will begin at 9:30.  Registration forms are available at www.CentralKiwanis.com, or right here on this page!  Corporate Sponsorships are still available.  All funds raised will be donated to the physical education programs at Central School System schools, Central Private School, and St. Alphonsus School.

Four years after their inception, Central Kiwanis Club is going stronger than ever, and our community is the lucky recipient of the fruit of their efforts.  To get more information or to become a member, contact Karla Feigley, President, at 954-2650.
