“Save the Gym” Update

By  |

CENTRAL FIRST BLUE b    The effort to save Central’s historic 1927 gymnasium is alive and well, but is on hold for a short while.  Last week the Central Community School Board approved going forward with the demolition and asbestos abatement for the buildings on the school property at Hooper and Sullivan, but to hold off on demolition of the old gym.  The asbestos abatement of the gym will be done as scheduled.
Preliminary estimates obtained by the Central Cultural Foundation and other interested citizens clearly determined that moving the gym off of its current location is not feasible.  In addition, many involved in the effort maintain that this site where the original Central School was built is a big part of the historical value of the building.
The Central Community School Board met last week and discussed these issues.  They have agreed to put demolition plans for the gym on hold until other issues can be resolved about the ultimate use of the property.  In the meantime, the abatement of asbestos will be done as scheduled by the contractor doing the rest of the work on the site.  This will leave a safe but unrestored 1927 gym on the site.
The time frame for the site decisions is uncertain, but appear to be at least three to six months away.  Work will continue in researching grant and funding options should the project be allowed to move forward.  If approved, the specific plans for funding and renovation will be put in full motion.  The final project proposal will still need School Board approval.
So, “Save the Gym” supporters, have a great summer and be ready to jump in on this project with both feet if we get the OK from our School Board.  And that would be Good News for a Great City.
