In Memoriam: Lennie McGehee

    Lennie Grace McGehee, 94, a resident of Smithdale, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Franklin County Memorial Hospital.
    She was born June 12, 1921 in Franklin County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Carey E. and Gillie Freeman Steele.
    She and her first husband, J. Y. McKenzie farmed together and owned and operated a small country store for many years. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Smithdale for many years where she served in the WMU and the Mt. Olive Baptist Church MOSS, until her health began to fail.
    She loved her family and always enjoyed their visits. She enjoyed going fishing, but never baited her hook and never took the fish off.
    She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, J. Y. McKenzie; her second husband, Louis McGehee; her brother, Prentiss “Strut” Steele and a sister, Luna “Lou” Young.
    She is survived by her five children and spouses, Carolyn and Bert Wroten of Central, LA, O.C. and Cookie McKenzie of Smithdale, James “Buster” and Eve McKenzie of Jackson, David and De’Layne McKenzie of Gulfport and Frank and Donna McKenzie of Mendenhall; one brother, Charles “Buck” Steele of Smithdale; one sister, Annie “Ann” McFadden of Smithdale; 11 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
    Visitation was Tuesday at Catchings-Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit from 5PM until 8PM and Wednesday from 9AM until services at 10AM with Rev. Richard Cothern, Rev. Travis Scruggs and Rev. Bruce Crosby officiating. Burial was in Middleton Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
    Pallbearers were Danny McKenzie, Jacob McKenzie, Kelvin Wroten, Andrew Barber, Jabus McKenzie, and Nathan McKenzie. Honorary pallbearers were Steven McKenzie, Devin Sterling, Trevor Ainsworth, Jeff McKenzie, and Ronnie McKenzie.
