American humorist Mark Twain said, “I can live for two months on a good compliment.” The Bible reveals something more life sustaining than a good compliment – expressed gratitude. When we share with someone why we are grateful for them they in turn are encouraged.
An example we can learn from is that of Apostle Paul with an ancient church in the city of Thessalonica. Following his pattern in the open words of his letter to them is a good aide.
We can encourage others with our expressions of gratitude for what we see God doing within them. When you see someone living in their circumstances with faith, acting with a loving attitude toward the people around them, or with exuberant hope in the face of adversity – tell them about it.
We can encourage others with expressions of gratitude for what God is doing around them. Become a discerning observer of the wonderful things God is doing around others. Ask God to give you eyes to recognize His works. And be sure to share what you see with the friend that may be discouraged.
Encourage others with expressions of gratitude for what God is doing through them. Encourage your spouse by telling them specific ways God has blessed you through them. Call an old school teacher from middle school or high school and express to them how they were a divine blessing in your life. And write a note to your parents– not a text, not an email, not a phone call but an actual handwritten note – and share with them your gratitude that God gave you them as parents.
This being the week of Veteran’s Day it is a great time to encourage those who have served our nation in our military. You probably know a vet, so say thank you to him or her for the way your life has been secure by their protection.
