Central Community Theatre Presenting Madeline’s Christmas

Submitted by Karen Clinkingbeard

Central Community Theatre’s Jr. Elite will present Madeline’s Christmas at the newly renovated Central High School’s theatre on Sunday, December 11 at 2pm.  Tickets are $10 and are on sale at Central Community Theatre’s office at 6631 Sullivan Rd. Monday-Thursday from 5-9pm or at the door on December 11.  Madeline’s Christmas, book and lyrics by Jennifer Kirkeby and music by Shirley Mier is based on the book by Ludwig Bemelmans.  "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines." So begins this delightful story of Madeline's Christmas! The day begins like any other day. Miss Clavel, played by Parker Wilson, takes the twelve little girls on their morning walk. They go to the zoo and then back to school for their French history lesson. Suddenly disaster strikes when everyone gets the flu! Everyone that is, except for the ever-resilient Madeline, played by Shelbi Lambert. Saddened that they may not be able to go home for Christmas, the girls and Miss Clavel take to their beds. But on Christmas Eve, the adventure begins when there is a knock at the front door. Expecting to see Santa, Madeline meets the Rug Merchants, Manning Lloyd & Zach Lejeune,  who have brought twelve very special rugs.  They remind Madeline that Christmas is the time of miracles, and that these are not ordinary rugs! Soon everyone wakes up feeling healthy. The Rug Merchants show them that they each have a magic carpet and that they can fly home to be with their families for Christmas! After saying goodbye to the girls, Miss Clavel finds a present that the girls left for her, befriends a little mouse, Sophie Sullivan, and counts her many blessings singing: "Everything Is Right Tonight." Before you know it, the girls fly back to the Old House and are together again on New Year's Eve. They thank Madeline for taking care of them and making their Christmas so special! Additional cast members include Taylor Alleman, Madolyn Brumfield, Caroline Crawford, Ava Denham, Sadie Fontenot, Ashley Gouedy, Gabriella Ivey, Jilyan King, Klair Netherland, Emily Rodrigue, Rebekah Serrett, Savannah Sullivan, Carolynn Waller, & Aubri Watts.  Contact Central Community Theatre at 225-938-7433 or by email at centralcommunitytheatre@cox.net; or check their website at www.CentralCommunityTheatre.org for additional information.

Central Community Theater Needs Area Support to Win $250,000

Submitted by Claire Clinkingbeard

Central Community Theatre, a non-profit working to promote the arts in Central, LA, develop talent in the community, provide opportunities for children and young adults to perform, and educate members of the community in theatrical arts is competing with charities nationwide for donations ranging from $25,000 to $250,000 through the Chase Community Giving program. Residents can help ensure their favorite charity’s success by simply voting for Central Community Theatre through the Chase Community Giving program running on the Facebook platform.

Through the utilization of the social media networks, the Chase Community Giving program has already directed more than 15 million dollars toward charities nationwide, putting the power to bring positive change across the nation into the hands of those who need it most. Due to enthusiasm, the program is being continued into this fall – giving hundreds of additional charities, including Central Community Theatre, the opportunity to win grants to further their mission.

“Central Community Theatre is constantly striving to strengthen our community by promoting the arts to children and adults alike regardless of a student’s ability to pay. Receiving even $25,000 would be an unbelievable opportunity to ensure the great work of this organization continues in Central City, LA.,” said Central Community Theatre Director, Karen Clinkingbeard.

The fall 2011 round of the Chase Community Giving program is designed to benefit smaller and local charities by being limited to 501c3 charities with operating budgets under $1 million. The top eligible charity receives $250,000 and the remaining 99 top charities earn $25,000 through $100,000 awards. More than 3 million dollars will be distributed to top vote-getters. Charities previously awarded grants through Chase Community Giving are not eligible for this round of competition.

Central Community Theatre is competing with thousands of charities across the country for awards from Chase. With the support of our volunteers, fans and local residents, Central Community Theatre has the opportunity to get much needed resources to implement big changes.

“CCT has allowed me to come out of my shell and has made me more confident in myself.  It has also given me a great love for theatre and wonderful friends in my theatre family.  CCT is a huge part of my life,” says Mackenzie Byrd, a 5-year student and current student teacher at Central Community Theatre.

How You Can Help

You can help Central Community Theatre win up to $250,000 by simply “Liking” the Chase Community Giving program at: http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/ and casting your vote to determine this fall’s winners.

The 25th Christmas Festival and Parade is just a few weeks away.  The Christmas Festival Committee is working hard to make the event special and memorable.  The Christmas Festival & Parade is an important tradition in our community with events for the whole family.  The parade in particular is always a big event, bringing together churches, schools, non-profits, and businesses to create a fun atmoshphere for “kids” of all ages.  There is still time to enter your float in the parade- visit www.CityOfCentralChamber.com and click “Downloads” at the bottom right corner of the page.

This year we are adding a Beauty Pageant that will take place on November 19.  There will be several different age levels in which to participate.  Ultimately, we will crown a Miss City of Central!  See page 4 for pageant details.

There will still be the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday evening Dec. 2, the Nativity Scene display, Lighting Displays Contest, the big Parade on Saturday Dec. 3, a Talent Show, Crafts Fair / Business Exhibition, the Carnival that is open Dec. 2-4, Pole Banner Decorations that are on display the whole month of December and our Christmas Chamber Coupon Book.  Many of these events are still open for registration.  Visit www.CityOfCentralChamber.com and click “Downloads” at the bottom right corner of the page for all of the forms and information you will need to sign up.

Another event that we are adding this year is an outdoor concert the night of the tree lighting ceremony.  The event will feature the newly formed Central Community Chorus.  Join in the fun and be a part of the Central Christmas tradition this year.
