Become All Things

Submitted by Sue Shaffer, Director of Children's Ministries at The Church in Central

“Most of the kids didn’t want to play with me,” he cried, “I was too poor for them.”  His voiced cracked as tears trailed down his face, as he continued, “I didn’t have any shoes like the other kids, but this kid did play with me,” and he pointed to my son, “He took HIS shoes off so that we could walk barefoot together.”

I was so proud of my son that day.  It was so encouraging watching this young boy that came from an extremely poor family be transformed through the power of God.

The apostle Paul writes that he became all things to all men so that he might win a few.

So as brothers and sisters in Christ, I invite you to get into the world of others so that you too, like Paul and my son, can win a few.

Galilee Baptist Celebrates 135th Anniversary

Galilee Baptist Church on Hwy. 64 celebrated their 135th Anniversery Homecoming on Sunday, October 3. Special music was delivered by Toni Black, Gladys Hunt, Diane Acosta, Jimmy Felker and the GBC Praise Team. The celebration included fellowship, worship, music by Lisa Smith and a home cooked meal afterwards. Members and visitors rejoiced and enjoyed the heartwarming and emotional service by Pastor Ron Lowery. He preached about running the race of life and how each and everyone of us are unique in our own race. The standing room only congregation gathered in the gym afterwards to enjoy the delicious food brought by members of the church. The Deacon of the Week, Garland Watts was announced at the church service and is available for ministry needs, prayer or to communicate needs to the church staff.  His number is 261-4797. The Family Fall Festival will be held on Wednesday, October 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information you can contact the church at 654-5633 or send an email to secretary@galileebc.com. It’s All Free

By Sue Shaffer, Director of Children’s Ministries at The Church in Central

We were on our way to Brazil for the first time and our plane had mechanical problems, so the airline put us up in a hotel.  My poor husband had to hang out as guard of all our stuff at the airport.

“Mmmm,’ I thought to myself, ’boy, that food on the buffet table looks so delicious!”   There were all sorts of colorful fruits, and an array of dishes which looked appetizing, but most of it, I had never seen before.

The waiter came by several times and said something to me in Portuguese and then pointed to the buffet table.  And I would then try my best to tell him, “I only have dollars, I don’t have any Brazilian money.”

This went on for quite some time, hours actually.  I guess he could tell that my sons and I were really hungry. We had been swimming in the hotel pool, and everyone knows what a little swimming will do for an appetite.

Finally, someone came by that could interpret for us.  I could hardly believe when he told me, “It’s all free! It’s been paid for by the airline.”

You know, I think this happens to us more than we realize.  Jesus has already paid the price for our salvation, but has everyone you know accepted His free gift?  He also paid the price for our healing, our peace and numerous other blessings that are all written in His Word.  But, for some reason we just don’t go to His banquet table to receive all He has for us.

Perhaps you need peace, healing, or maybe salvation.  All you have to do is ask.  He is God after all, and he hears all prayers at all times and from all people.

Local Author Releases Book

By Mia Freneaux

Central resident John “Skip” Blythe has recently released the book “Why God? – Learning to Understand the Ways of Our Creator”.  Skip, a member of the worship team at Healing Place Church and an ordained minister, says he wrote the book because of “the questions I always seemed to be asking God about my own life; I just felt that if I had so many questions, probably everyone did.”  Skip started writing his book early in 2009, finishing it in about 8 months with encouragement from friends and family.  McDougal and Associates published it and released it in April.  Response has been good.  Skip, who has been a missionary in Juarez, Mexico and has pastored a church in El Paso, wanted to write a “simple book”, one that is “conversational” to help everyone understand that “God loves them and wants the best for them.”  “I would love for the book to help people to get closer to God and to trust Him more,” he says. “Why God?” is available online at bn.com, booksamillion.com, amazon.com, and locally by contacting Skip at 802-0007 or emailing him at skblyt@cox.net.

Walking by Faith

By Mia Freneaux

Last Saturday at 7:37 a.m. precisely, 2 women stood by the side of Florida Boulevard and joined in prayer as the world rushed by.  They stood by a cross that had just been planted in the ground with the number “9482” on it, and prayed for the families of the victims of 9/11.  It was a single moment in a 9 year long journey.

In January of 2002, Carol Cruise took the first step in answer to a call God had placed on her heart 9 years before as she faced the amputation of her leg after a 3 year battle of 15 surgeries to try and save it.  At that time, she asked the Lord to use her.  She told Him she wanted to be “Better, not Bitter”.  After her surgery, God gave her a recurring vision – a vision to walk the entire perimeter of the 48 contiguous states, praying for the protection of our country, for people to find Christ and “unite in their hearts through prayer for God’s will for our country and for peace in the world.”  January 2002 saw her standing at a 3 foot cross in South Beach, Miami Florida on her prosthetic leg, ready to begin what would become an over 10,000 mile prayer walk.  September of 2010 saw her in Baton Rouge, on mile 9,482 of her trip, placing a wooden cross at every mile she has walked.  The crosses have a card attached that states, “If you find this cross in your hands, please don’t throw it away!  Please pass it on to someone and tell that person ‘God Loves You’.”  They are made by volunteers, and have literally “crossed” the globe, turning up in Bolivia, Afghanistan, parts of Asia and Africa, and even Australia.

Carol, a 56 year old ordained minister and mother, says she never saw herself as someone who would even consider such a thing.  Far from being an athlete, she was not only one-legged, but overweight and hypertensive.  As Carol puts it, if she had been able to come this far on her own 2 legs, it would have brought her a lot of glory.  Doing it on a prosthesis, with her other challenges, can only be attributed to a miracle of God.  The first few years, she couldn’t walk during the winter because of the severe weather in the northernmost parts of our country.  That didn’t stop her from having to walk through 2 October blizzards, however, or through 5 inches of snow in an April snowstorm.  She has walked through 900 miles of desert, including Texas in July!  She has had a mountain lion and a wolf at separate times for company, not to mention the occasional snake.  In spite of the challenges, Carol focuses on the many miracles God has performed in her life.

One of these miracles is Wendi Miller, a teacher and mother of 2 who, after driving Carol’s support car for 2 weeks one summer, felt the Lord calling her to this service full time.  At this point in her walk, Carol was having to take enormous amounts of time to drive to pick up her support car drivers and then return them to their homes when their volunteered time was over.  She managed to walk only 100 miles or so during this 3 month period and was feeling discouraged.  Wendi became yet another answer to Carol’s prayers, and in 2003 took the wheel as her full time help on the road.  Wendi supplies Carol with water, ice packs, and a place to dry off her prosthesis (about every 3/10’s of a mile in this humid southern climate) because the sweat makes it slip off her leg.  She is her companion on the road, along with their dog “Walker T” (for “tripod”).  Carol was asked in Ohio if she would ever want a dog along for the ride, and she jokingly answered it would have to be a 3 legged one for her, and a Pomeranian for Wendi.  Less than 1 month later, they were joined by Walker T, a rescue dog who is trained as an assist dog for amputees.  How he came to join them is yet another of God’s miracles, as he was scheduled to be euthanized the very day the shelter got the call for a 3 legged Pomeranian.  He has joined them in ministering to those in hospitals and children in schools.  The fact that Walker T is with them, the fact that in all this time they have paid for only one hotel stay (and that half price!) in their entire journey, the fact that God has answered every need, the fact that Carol is the first person in the history of the old Mississippi River Bridge to be allowed to cross it on foot, all attest to the faithfulness of God towards those who are called according to His purpose.

Carol and Wendy have many miraculous experiences to share.  Carol has been spending time recently writing a book about those experiences.  After the walk is over on December 31, she has been invited by Canada, Mexico, and people in various countries in Africa to come there with a cross and help them begin their own prayer walk.  Information on the prayer walk, photographs, contact information and how you can support this vision can be found at www.faithwalk.net.

Carol has shown what God can do with a willing heart, no matter how unlikely it may appear in the eyes of the world.  She has been His instrument, bringing peace and unity throughout this 9 year journey.  Are we doing the same for our small part of the world?  Maybe the challenge placed here for us is to pray for Central what Carol has faithfully prayed for our country: “Unite our hearts in prayer for God’s will for our city and for peace in our town.”

The photo above is of the cross planted at Mile #9,482 in Carol's journey.  The cross was placed this past Saturday, September 11th in honor of all of the families who lost loved ones on 9/11/2001.

Central Bible Church Offering New Study

Submitted by Nicholas LeBlanc

What is a Bible Church?

There are only a few "Bible" Churches in the Baton Rouge area, so it comes as no surprise that people are curious as to what makes a church a "Bible Church."

Every Bible Church is both similar and unique. Usually they are committed to expository preaching, that is, verse by verse teaching/preaching through books of the Bible. As opposed to topical or textual sermons, expository preaching guarantees that the teaching is authoritative to the extent that the teacher/preacher explains what the Bible says in each verse and helps the congregant apply Scripture's teaching in their lives.

Also, a "Bible Church" is usually committed to personal discipleship. This can manifest in a variety of ways, but there is always a commitment to people growing in the faith.  Central Bible Church begins this process with a series of courses in  Bible Study Methods, Church History, Systematic Theology, and Community Missions (see www.central-bible.org/ministries for more info).

"Bible Churches" take seriously the teaching of Scripture that says we are to, "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18) and "the knowledge of the faith leads to godliness" (Titus 1:1), etc.

We'd love for you to join us as we study 1 Corinthians (10:30am) or the Psalms (6:30pm) on Sundays and would encourage you to join us for a seven week course in "Introduction to Theology" beginning October 6th, at 7:00pm. Contact us at church@central-bible.org for more information, to sign up for classes and for meeting times and locations.
