National Federation of Republican Women Affirms GOP Support of Women at Board Meeting

Local Republican Leader Trains for 2012 Elections

More than 250 Republican women leaders from across the nation gathered at the National Federation of Republican Women’s (NFRW) spring board meeting in New Orleans on March 15-17 to prepare for the 2012 elections and to declare that the latest Democrat media strategy is just a cheap political ploy.

“Democrats are running around squawking about a ‘Republican War on Women,” NFRW President Rae Lynne Chornenky said. “They are ignoring the indisputable fact that the NFRW has more than 75,000 female members whose leadership, influence, skill and passion for conservative principles form the backbone of our party, and have for more than 70 years. This liberal campaign scheme is clearly a move of desperation and is simply not rooted in fact.”

Chornenky encouraged attendees, which included Republican Women of Central President Joan Lansing, First Vice President Betsy Otken Barnes and Community Cares Chairman Ann Watts of the City of Central to stand strong during this critical campaign year. “It will take all of us, working as a unified team, to restore effective leadership to our great nation. We must elect a Republican president and U.S. Senate, and maintain our numbers in the U.S. House and in state and local governments.”

In preparation for the elections, attendees participated in workshops on the national political landscape and on counteracting voter fraud. In addition, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal delivered an inspirational keynote address on why conservative proposals are working in his state and across the nation.

Betsy Otken Barnes was confirmed on the national Membership Committee of NFRW. She currently also serves as Vice Chair of Membership for the state federation.

Founded in 1938, the NFRW has thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories, making it one of the largest women’s political organizations in the country. The grassroots organization works to promote the principles and objectives of the Republican Party, elect Republican candidates, inform the public through political education and activity, and increase the effectiveness of women in the cause of good government.

In Memoriam: Fred Wayne Rogers

“Well done, good and faithful servant! Come and share your Master’s happiness. Matthew 25:21” Fred Wayne Rogers, 90, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Central, Tuesday, March 13, 2012. He was born in Fairbanks, Louisiana, August 24, 1921, to Fred Odom and Rilla Howard Rogers, grew up in Union Parish and graduated from Fairbanks High School in 1938. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of two wars, putting his education plans on hold to serve in World War II as part of the Iwo Jima invasion. He then returned to serve his country in the Korean Conflict, as a communications specialist. After completing his service the second time, he returned to Louisiana to marry Marion Dorice “Dot” Malone, to whom he was married over 50 years. He was finally able to return to LSU to complete his education as a chemical engineer and immediately began his career with Exxon which ended with his retirement with over 30 years of service. His years there allowed him the opportunity to travel the world as a project manager and consultant for the company. He also served as the president and president Emeritus of Exxon Federal Credit Union. He was a long time member of Immanuel Baptist Church, serving in every capacity needed by the church, from Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Finance Committee to unpaid grounds-keeper and church handyman along with his long time friend Maxie Verbois.  Fred truly had the heart of a servant as he cared for the homes and vehicles of untold people over the years, especially the elderly and widows (often being observed wrapping the pipes of numerous homes on freezing nights). His lifelong example of service, care, and giving will influence the lives of many families and friends for generations to come.
He is survived by his children, daughters Amy Rogers, and Cindy Rogers Morris and her husband James “Butch” Morris, and grandchildren Matthew Wayne Morris and Michael James Morris, sister Elizabeth Fastnacht and her husband Ruben, sister-in-law Mildred Cicala, and dear friends Nelda McLin and Bobbie McLin. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
The family would like to especially  thank his long time friend and physician Dr. Herschel Dean, his sitters from Personal Homecare Services who have faithfully cared for him and his family, Lane Home Health, and the skilled Generations Hospice team who assisted us as we navigated this life transition.
Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd Baton Rouge, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday, March 18, 2012 and resumes Monday at 11:00 AM until memorial services at 12:00 Noon to be conducted by Rev. Steve Johnson and Rev. Andy Pierce. Burial to follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park in the Garden of Liberty.
Fred had a great love for his church (Immanuel Baptist Church,  10870 Lovett Rd, City of Central, LA  70818) and the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home (P. O. Box 4196, Monroe, LA  71203). In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his honor.

Countdown to “Cooking” – Cooking in Central Next Friday and Saturday

Arguably Central's largest Crawfish Boil happens at Cooking in Central next Friday night, March 23, starting at 5 PM.  The Navy Brass Band will be playing until 7 PM followed by dancing to the music of Carbon Copy Band from 7-9 PM.  The food and fun pick back up Saturday from 10-3 featuring Central's biggest cook-off, live, silent and progressive auctions, and live entertainment by local schools and groups.
This year's event is at the Village at Magnolia Square on Lovett Road and will feature a few changes.  Anyone can use their meal ticket Saturday to enjoy the great cooking under the tent, but you now have the option of trading in your meal ticket for a bracelet that is your pass to mingle among the cooks and sample their food right in the cooking area.  Another change this year is that due to the serving of food and out of respect for other patrons who may fear dogs, no pets are allowed.
