Found Dog

This female dog (possible yellow lab mix?) showed up in a local yard last Friday.  She had no collar but is house trained, leash trained, sits, shakes your hand, and is great with the kids. She must have been someone’s family pet but she may have been on her own for a while now because she is skinny and a bit timid.  The person who found her thinks she is probably 1-2 years old.  If you know to whom she belongs, please call (225) 205-9846.

EBRSO Awarded $1.25 Million in COPS Grant to Hire 8 New Deputies, Sheriff Gautreaux to Form New Emergency Services Unit

Submitted by the EBR Sheriff’s Office

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $1.25 million grant to hire 8 new deputies from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).  The $1.25 million will cover 8 of the deputies’ salaries for three years.  Sheriff Sid Gautreaux is in the process of forming a new Emergency Services Unit (ESU) comprised of 8 current employees. The grant will cover filling the vacancies left by the eight that will serve in ESU.

The ESU will provide a rapid response to life-threatening incidents and other emergency situations. In many cases, ESU will be available to setup immediately to provide containment, evacuation, tactical/medical support, negotiations and intelligence. In addition, ESU will conduct tactical and other training, assist various departments including, but not limited to Uniform Patrol, Narcotics, Warrants, Community Policing, Violent Crimes Unit and SCAT. ESU will also patrol the community and supplement Uniform Patrol when call volumes are high, when assistance is required in setting up perimeters and in special community initiatives such as warrant roundups.

“This funding will give us the support to continue to put more feet on the streets of the parish,” Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. “Community policing is so vital to keeping crime down in our community. I’m so pleased that we were awarded this grant so that we can continue to make the parish safer.”

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is only one of three in Louisiana to receive the COPS grant. The Department of Justice also awarded COPS grants to West Monroe Police Department and New Orleans Police Department. The last time EBRSO received a COPS grant was in 1994 to form the Special Community Anti-Crime Team (SCAT).

“I have high hopes for ESU,” Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. “We formed SCAT in 2004 using the same COPS grant. Today, SCAT is an integral part of our community. I think ESU will have the same kind of impact on our parish.”

The estimated amount of federal funds to be awarded to the jurisdiction is $1,257,560. Overall, the Department of Justice awarded $243 million in grants to 238 agencies aimed at creating and saving law enforcement jobs.  The awards were made through the COPS Hiring Program, a competitive grant program that provides funding directly to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire police officers dedicated to addressing specific crime and disorder challenges confronting communities.  The grants provide 100 percent funding for the entry-level salaries and benefits of newly-hired, or rehired, full-time officer positions over a three-year period. For the 2011 COPS Hiring Program, 2,712 applications were received requesting more than $2 billion and 8,999 positions.

The grant awarded to EBRSO is specifically designated for community policing plans focused on homicide, rape, and repeat offenders.

Young Central Student Fatally Injured in Crash

Louisiana State Police Press Release;  Photo by Expressions Photography

10 year old Emily Simmers, a student at Central Intermediate School, passed away Wednesday morning as a result of injuries sustained in a Monday morning auto accident.  The initial press release from the Louisiana State Police follows:

Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a two-vehicle crash on LA 3034 (Wax Road) east of Sullivan Road shortly after 6:00 am this morning.  Both drivers were injured and a young girl sustained life-threatening injuries.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 1991 Chevrolet pickup, being driven by Richard Fletcher (W/M, age 41) of Denham Springs, was traveling east on Wax Road when a 1996 Honda Accord pulled into its path.  The Accord, being driven by Mary Simmers (W/F, age 48) of Clinton, was pulling out of the parking lot of Central High School when it was struck by the pickup.  Simmers’ passenger, a 10-year-old female, was riding in the right rear seat when the crash occurred.  She sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.  Both drivers and the young girl were transported to Lane Memorial Hospital.  Simmers and her passenger were both restrained and Fletcher was not restrained.  Through investigation, Troopers found that the young girl was not properly restrained.  The shoulder portion of her seat belt was behind her back and the lap belt had ridden up onto her stomach.  Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash.  Simmons was cited for failure to yield, and the crash remains under investigation

Troopers would like to remind motorists to buckle up every time they get into a vehicle.  It is also the responsibility of the driver to ensure that everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained at all times.  Serious injuries and deaths are more likely when young people are not properly restrained in the vehicle.  Until the seat belt can properly “fit”, children should ride in an approved child safety seat.   Louisiana law requires children to remain in a booster seat until they are 6 years old and weigh 60 pounds.  However, they should remain in a booster seat until they can wear a regular seat belt properly.  More information regarding Louisiana’s Child Passenger Safety Law can be found on the Louisiana State Police website at http://www.lsp.org/troopachildsafety.html  Troop A also serves as a Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station, where

Troopers who are certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians can assist with proper fit and installation of child safety seats into vehicles and provide information to help keep children as safe as possible in vehicles.
