The Facilities/Equipment Committee and the Finance Committee will meet on Monday, February 6, 2012 at the City Hall Office, located at 13421 Hooper Road, Suite 7, Central, LA at 5:00 p.m. The meeting has been called to consider the following agenda items:

1) To consider and take appropriate action relative to the procurement of furniture for the New Intermediate and Middle Schools. (Requested by Mr. Faulk, presented by Mr. Ross Bogan)

2) To consider and take appropriate action relative to the procurement of Network Switches and Video Systems for the New Intermediate and Middle Schools. (Requested by Mr. Faulk, presented by Mr. Ross Bogan)

Central High School recently honored 59 Accelerated Reader winners from the first semester. Four students became “Millionaire Readers,” which means they read a million words a year for two consecutive years. Crystal Rankin had the distinction of doing this for three consecutive years! 16 x 20” posters of Millionaire Readers hang in the school library. The top three point earners received school checks, and everyone received a prize of some kind, including flash drives, gift cards, shirts, hats, etc.

CPS 100th Day Celebration

Every year in celebration of the 100th day of school, students in K4-6th grades attempt to collect 100 cans of food per class to be donated to families throughout our area. The class that collects the most cans is awarded a pizza party; this year’s winning class was Mrs. Jan Raney’s 6th graders.

A total of 1,751 cans of food were collected this year. Thank you to all the students and parents who made this outstanding collection possible. Three-fourths of the cans (over 1,000 lbs!) was delivered to the Zachary Food Bank; the other items were delivered to Fellowship Church whose youth/college group participate in an outreach

ministry to the homeless and needy.

In discussing with the students that there would be only one winning class, Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Debbie Lacy was touched by some of their comments: “There really shouldn’t be a winner. We are all winners for giving,” and “This isn’t about winning. This is about helping people in need.” How wonderful it is to have children understand the importance of cheerful giving!

• Lower elementary students celebrated 100th day by wearing t-shirts decorated with 100 items. Throughout the day, these students practiced counting to 100 using different items and activities.

• Students in Mrs. Jan Raney’s 6th grade class show off their tower of cans collected for the annual 100th day food drive. These students will receive a pizza party later this month for collecting the most cans.

• The 1,751 cans of food collected by the elementary students for 100th day were distributed to the Zachary Food Bank and to Fellowship Church.

Anna Campbell Graduates Magna Cum Laude from Bagley College

December 9, 2010, Anna L. Campbell, the daughter of Jerrell and Susan Campbell, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mississippi State University's Bagley College of Engineering with her Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Anna is now working at Southwire, a cable and wire manufacturer, in Starkville, MS.

Central’s 405 Third Graders Receive Dictionaries from RWC

Central area schools have 405 third graders enrolled, and each one of them received a gift from the Republican Women of Central – a dictionary of their very own – to keep for use throughout their education.

Students, third grade teachers and librarians at St. Alphonsus, Central Private, Tanglewood Elementary and Galilee Baptist Church School received the dictionaries from funds raised last year by RWC as their Education and Literacy and Civics for Kids programs, chaired by Maudell Hill. Committee members are Tracy Barnes and Louise Rauls.

A special presentation was made by George and Martha Washington (Mary Louise and Corley Senyard of Central). The Senyards are members of the East Baton Rouge Parish Republican Women and regularly visit civic and history classrooms in schools as part of their Civics for Kids program. Students were taught the significance of the Pledge of Allegiance and importance of patriotism.

Assisting with dictionary distribution with the Education and Literacy committee were RWC President Joan Lansing, Second Vice President Debbie Dougherty, Chaplain Janice Green, Historian Chris Bone, Parliamentarian Judy Clay, C Brockwell Bone, Stacy Wicker Butler, Judy Clay, Juanita Ross, and Ann Watts.

If fundraising efforts are successful in 2012, RWC will distribute dictionaries to the new 2012-2013 classes of third graders in October.

Kiwanis Recognizes Tanglewood’s “Terrific Kids”

The City of Central Kiwanis recognized these 13 students from Tanglewood Elementary on Friday, January 20th. These students were chosen by their teacher as a "Terrific Kid".

Terrific Kids is a student-recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance.

"Terrific" is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable.

Ms Freeman, faculty member at CHS, will be offering a night time ACT prep class Feb 2 and Feb. 9th. 6-7:15 p.m. in T-Building 5 (located at entrance of coaches' parking lot off Wax Rd, North parking lot entrance). This class will teach strategies for each of the 4 sections of the ACT and a short test practice session as time permits. The class is a total of $50 and checks need to be payable to "Susan Freeman". The class size is limited and will be first come, first serve. Please have your student deliver a check and sign-up information, as follows, no later than January 27. Please have your student find Ms Freeman to give her the check and sign-up information.
