School Board Meeting Tonight at Central High Theater

Tonight's CCSS School Board meeting will be held at the Central High School Theater (10200 East Brookside Drive) at 6 PM.  The agenda is as follows:

1.  Call to Order

2.  Prayer

3.  Pledge

4.  Roll Call

5.  Recognitions and Awards (Mr. Faulk)

6.  To consider approval of the minutes of the Regular School Board Meeting held October 24, 2011

7.  To receive a report from the Superintendent relative to instructional and support staff positions. (Mr. Faulk)

8.  To receive an update on the Dyslexia Program. (Mr. Ted Powell)

9.  To receive a report from HR/Policies Committee Meeting held on November 7, 2011, and take appropriate action relative to the following items:

    a.  A recommendation to engage the services of a School Psychologist to be under contract for the 2nd semester of the 2011-2012 school year to be funded by Carryover IDEA Funds.

    b.  A recommendation to contract for professional services to address the needs of newly identified talented students to be funded by the General Fund.

10.  To consider a request for an Out-of-State Field Trip and take appropriate action. (Mr. Faulk)

11.  To receive a report from the Facilities/Equipment Committee Meeting held on October 24, 2011, and take appropriate action relative to the following item:

    a.  Review of information relative to equipment to be included when the Request for Qualifications is issued to conduct a Maintenance Program Study.

12.  To receive a report from the Facilities/Equipment Committee Meeting held on November 9, 2011, and take appropriate action relative to the following items:

    a.  A presentation from representatives of Arkel/Anderson regarding the most current schedule for the construction of the new Middle School and new Elementary School

    b.  A report from Terra Com representatives relative to testing conducted and their results for the construction of the new Middle School and new Elementary School

    c.  A presentation by the Civil Engineer of the status of the Site Road Work at the construction site for the new Middle School and new Elementary School.

    d.  A presentation by PBK Architects of the overall status of the construction of the new Middle School and new Elementary School.

    e.  A presentation by PBK and staff of updated information regarding Change Orders for the construction of the new Middle School and new Elementary School.

13.  To consider for a 2nd Reading the Proposed Facilities Use Policy. (Mr. Faulk)

14.  To consider granting the staff permission to contact vendors who could provide Network Support Services, conduct interviews and make a recommendation for Professional Services in this area. (Mr. Faulk)

15.  To receive information relative to the Special Election to be held on November 19, 2011, for voters to consider the EXPIRATION of the 1/2 cent sales tax approved for the construction of the new Middle School. (Mr. Faulk)

CHS Book Fair Next Week

Cavalier House Books is partnering with the CHS Library to host our second annual book fair 11/15-17. The latest selection of bestsellers, popular young adult fiction, and required reading as well as the timeless classics will be availlable for immediate purchase. Students will visit the book fair through their English classes; parents are also invited.  A portion of proceeds will go to the CHS Library.

To access all databases, all you need is a free Library Card number!  Available in our Online Database collection, through the State Library of Louisiana, is HomeworkLouisiana, powered by Tutor.com. This resource allows students to interact with a live tutor for help with homework from 2-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.  HomeworkLouisiana also provides practices, glossaries, test preparation and more, any time, via the Skills Center. HomeworkLouisiana is available by visiting www.ebrpl.com and clicking “Online Databases,” or by visiting www.homeworkla.org.

CCA Forum Tuesday on the Central Community School System

For their November forum, the Central Community Alliance will host a Central Community School System Update.  The forum will be held this Tuesday, November 15th at 7:00 pm in the DEMCO Meeting Room (16262 Wax Road).
 
The guest speaker will be Michael Faulk, Superintendent of the Central Community School System.  He will bring us up-to-date on the current status of new School construction, Enrollment, Letter Grading, and answer audience questions.  All Central citizens are welcome to attend this free event.

Human Resources/Policies Committee Meeting Tonight at 6:00

The Human Resources/Policies Committee will meet tonight, Monday, November 7, 2011 at the City Hall Office located 13421 Hooper Road, Suite 7, Central, LA at 6:00 PM.  The meeting has been called to consider the following agenda items:

Social Studies Teachers Receive State Honors

 

From Central Private School

Two CPS social studies teachers were honored by the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies (LCSS) at their annual teachers’ convention held in Baton Rouge on October 6 & 7.

At an awards ceremony on Thurs., Oct. 6, Mrs. Susan McWilliams, who teaches junior high social studies and home living, was named as an Outstanding Teacher of Social Studies at the Middle School Level. Mrs. McWilliams received a certificate and an engraved glass award (pictured above with Mr. David Faerber-LCSS President-elect).

During the general session on Fri., Oct. 7, Ms. Alicia Fergerson, who serves as the social studies department chair and teaches high school social studies and journalism, was elected to serve in the position of secretary on the 2011-2012 LCSS Executive Board. Ms. Fergerson, along with the other officers, were installed at the close of the session by Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne (pictured below).

Congratulations to both of these teachers for their accomplishments!

St. Alphonsus Students Participate in Pro-Life Day

On October 18th, the middle school students at St. Alphonsus School took part in a Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity.  they signed up to remain silent in solidarity on behalf the thousands of unborn children permanently silenced through surgical abortion in this nation. Red duct tape was taped to their shirts to identify those students taking part in this day of silence.
