CHS Marketing Program Receives Educational Grant

Submitted by Cindy Dykes

For the fourth year in a row, the Central High School Marketing Program and teacher, Ms. Dykes, were awarded an educational grant from the Marketing Education Retail Alliance (MERA). For the 2011-2012 school year, the grant received is in the amount of $3700. MERA was created in 2000 and is administered by the Louisiana Retailers Association. MERA grants are funded through the Louisiana Department of Economic Development under the authority of LA R.S. 47:318.
The educational grant provided by MERA shall be used to purchase educational supplies to enhance Louisiana’s Marketing Education classrooms. Such items that may be purchased are: computer/technology equipment; computer software; classroom supplies; competition preparation materials; and other marketing education-related items that are necessary for students and the classroom. This year’s grant will also aid in students participating in some off-campus learning opportunities to enrich their knowledge learned in the classroom.
The MERA association has, in the past, provided grant funds to LA marketing teachers for materials and equipment to improve and enhance marketing programs throughout the state. Due to more state and local budget cuts, these funds are helping teachers provide rigorous and relevant curriculum in the classroom for which students can take with them upon graduation and into their chosen career field(s).
Programs and associations such as MERA make it possible to successfully teach and prepare our young individuals for tomorrow, and it is much appreciated within the city and schools of Central, LA.

St Alphonsus Students Sharpen their Math Skills to Help Save Lives

Students at St. Alphonsus are once again getting their math skills ready to help save lives.  Their annual St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon will be kicking off on February 9th.  St. Jude Math-A-Thon is an educational program that teaches kids the importance of math while helping children with cancer and other deadly diseases. Students ask family and friends to sponsor their participation in the program.  Each student then completes math problems in a Funbook or online.  Once the problems are completed, the student collects the pledges from their sponsors and returns the money to school to be sent to St. Jude.

Through the Math-A-Thon students make it possible for St. Jude to treat the world’s sickest children battling cancer and other deadly diseases, The great part is that St. Jude does this at no cost to the families of these children! No family is ever asked to pay St Jude for the care their child receives. The hospital’s research has helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancer from less than 20 percent to almost 80 percent today.  To learn more about St. Jude, please visit www.stjude.org.

With the Math-A-Thon program, St. Alphonsus students have raised over $257,000.00 to help save lives.  If you would like to help save a child’s life contact a St. Alphonsus student or Ms. Alice Frank at afrank@stalphonsusbr.org, or 225-261-5299.  All donations must be turned in by March 9th
