Coach Sid: “LeSage is Back!”

Former and future Coach David "Bubba Ray" LeSage apparently did a terrible job of retiring just a year ago.  Lured back to the Wildcat sidelines by newly re-appointed head football coach Sid Edwards, who also failed to stay retired form coaching, LeSage will return as an assistant coach for at least a year.  LeSage, for whom Central Football's "LeSage Award" is named, is a Central High graduate and football standout and coached at Central from 2000 until 2010.  Welcome back Coach…and never say never.  In other coaching appointments, Amy Fountain and Maureen Edwards have joined the staff as Academic Coaches.

Denham Springs Continues Hot Start with Win Over Central

Submitted by Coach Godley

Denham Springs (3-0) took early command of the 5A District Varsity Bowling standings by defeating Central (0-3) on Monday (1-30-12) afternoon, 17-10.  It was by far the best overall performance as a team for the Wildcats in the early season, but in the end, Denham Springs continued their winning ways over Central’s bowling program.
Central got off to a slow start in Game 1 by falling behind 1-7 and losing Total Pins, 806-881.  Jacob Garretson (Freshman) and Bryan Waites (Junior) were the high bowlers for Central in Game 1 with a 181 and 176 respectively.
Game 2 was a completely different story.  The Wildcats clawed their way back into the match by bowling an 861 series to Denham Spring’s 818 and winning 6 of the 8 points.  Kevin Kennedy (Sophomore) helped spark the comeback by throwing a season high 172 and Garretson rolled a very nice 223.  Going into Game 3, Central trimmed Denham’s lead to 9-7 and Total Pins lead to 32 pins.
The Wildcats started off strong in Game 3, but Central slowly fell behind Denham and ultimately lost Game 3, 2-6 and 823-935.  Sean Murphy (Sophomore) lead the Wildcats in Game 3 with a 177, followed by Waites with a 170 and Kennedy’s 165.
In the end, Central lost the match 10-17 and Total Pins 2490-2634.  Denham Springs was led by their talented anchor Mason Zetsch (536 series, 187 high game).  Central had a balanced attack from Kennedy (465, 172), Murphy (462, 177), Waites (478, 176) and Garretson (562, 223).  Garretson currently leads the Wildcats in average with a 199.
Central will get another shot at derailing the Yellow Jackets on February 16th, but up next is Catholic High (2-0) this Thursday (2-2-12) at Circle Bowl.  Central has never defeated Catholic and this group of Wildcats is looking forward to ending that dominance.   To view the official website for standings and stats, visit http://www.leaguesecretary.com/circle_bowl/baton_rouge_boys_varsity/bowling/league/61367/0/0/0/leaguefilesstandings.aspx

Garretson and Waits Can’t Help Central Bowling Overcome Being a Bowler Down

Central High (0-2) bowled a very competitive match against Zachary High (1-1) at Metro Bowl on Thursday (1-26-12) afternoon, but came up a little short losing 7-20.  The match was considerably closer than the final score will indicate.  Unfortunately due to an illness to one of the Wildcat bowlers, Central had to compete down a bowler and bowl 5 on 6.

Bryan Waits (Junior) came out hot, bowling a 224 and Lindsey Giacone (Senior) stepped up with a 154 in the 1st Game.  Waits and Giacone helped the team to a competitive 786 series in Game 1 to Zachary’s 867.  Central trailed after the Game 1 down 3-5, but even with being a bowler down, Central only trailed Zachary in the most important category (Total Pins) by 81 pins.

Waits continued his good bowling in Game 2 with a 178 and Jacob Garretson (Freshman) topped that with a 221. Central bowled a 762 series to Zachary’s 873.

Although Central was down 5-11 and 192 pins going into Game 3, Central did not give up.  In Game 3, Garretson set the building on fire with an outstanding 264, Waits threw a 199 and the rest of the Wildcats bowled strong to finish with an 823 series.  With an extra bowler, Zachary only bowled an 849 series.

Overall Central lost the match, but showed they won’t back down from any team, even if they’re down a bowler.  Central’s talented 1-2 Punch once again led the team.  Garretson (currently averaging 205.83) shot a team season high 642 series (264, team season high game) and Waits (185 avg) shot a 601 series (224).  Giacone chipped in with a 399 series (154) and Sean Murphy (Sophomore) bowled a 401 series (143).  Zachary was lead by Marquisse Taylor with  a 509 series (188).

Central’s next match is Monday (1-30-12) at All Star Lanes (3:20PM) against one of the District 5A favorites, Denham Springs (2-0).

CENTRAL BOWLING TEAM WINS JAMBOREE

Central High started their season with a convincing victory, a 4-Team Jamboree consisting of Central, Tara, Baker and Runnels this past Thursday (1-19-12). In the opening matches (2 games), Central cruised easily by defeating Tara 16-0, while Baker defeated Runnels in a closer match.

Central was led by Jacob Garretson (Freshman) with games of 248 & 235 for an outstanding 2-game series of 483. Garretson was followed by Bryan Waits (Junior) with a 226 & 203 for a 429 series.  In the Jamboree Finals, Central defeated Baker 5-3 to seal the victory.

Central’s 1-2 Punch fell off a bit during the final game with Garretson shooting a 164 to lead the Wildcats and Waits throwing a 159. The rest of the Wildcats stepped up to help the team win the most important stat, Total Pins (819-758).

CHS BOWLING DROPS FIRST MATCH OF SEASON

Central High (0-1) dropped their season opening match against Scotlandville (1-0), 7-20, on Monday (1-23-12) afternoon.

The Wildcats came out bowling strong in the 1st Game shooting a Season-High 956, led by Jacob Garretson (Freshman) with a 216 and Bryan Waits (Junior) with a 213. Scotlandville answered back with an outstanding 996 to take a 5-3 lead.

Unfortunately, Games 2 & 3 didn’t go as smoothly with Central only shooting series of 780 & 801 respectively to Scotlandville’s 855 & 948. Garretson tried to help right the ship in the 3rd Game with a 218, but it was little too late.  Scotlandville won the Total Pins battle, 2799 to Central’s 2537.

Scotlandville has a couple talented arms, led by Deontrae Taylor with a 550 series (196, high game) and Kevon Rollins with a 522 (208).  Central was led by their equally talented 1-2 Punch, Garretson with a 593 series (218, high game), Waits with a 510 (213) and Sean Murphy chipping in a 478 (174).

Say it Again… “Coach Sid”: Sid Edwards Returns as Wildcat Head Football Coach

By Dave Freneaux

Sid Edwards has been named Head Football Coach for Central High School.  He will also remain as Athletic Director for the Central Community School System.  Coach Sid came to Central in 2005 as an assistant and returned as head coach from 2007 through 2009, compiling a 30-7 record including two district titles and making it to the state quarterfinals and the state semifinals.  Coach Sid now is back at the helm with a Wildcat team that owns a four year string of district titles.  Coach Sid sat with Central Speaks and shared some thoughts earlier this week and offered the following insights:

Two years of not coaching had to have gotten you thinking about your next coaching job.  What is your dream job?
“Central High School.  If I got to go into the duck pond and pick my job, well I’m looking for the duck with Central on it.  That is the duck I want.  This is where I want to be.”

What are your goals for this next year?
“I want to win every game.  I want to win every playoff game.  I want to go to the Superdome and I want to win the state championship, a 5-A state championship, which is the highest level state championship, and that’s all things I want.  How awesome would that be?  But, it would cheapen my profession and cheapen my worth and cheapen the worth of our young men if that is THE goal.  Our goal is to have a comprehensive football program that includes and involves our players, our coaches, our families, our fans, our administration, Central office, the kindergartner at Bellingrath, the flute player, the band, the silks, the kittens, the cheerleaders, the pride, we have a new group called the steppers.  That is our football program.  The goal is to bring all of that together, and on Friday night it culminates with a big party.  That is the celebration.  Those 10 Friday nights are celebrations, but, win lose or draw, we will not be defined by whether we go to the Superdome or not.”

What would you say is your coaching philosophy?
“I’m going to tell you how I coach.  I have a goal today, and I’ll be darned if I’m not going to accomplish it today.  Today, I am going to win a state championship.  I’m winning one today.  I win them one at a time.  It is going to present itself.  There may be one of my football players having a tough time at home.  Maybe I’ll find out one of them has been drinking.  I’m going to make a difference in somebody’s life today.  That is a mini state championship, to go in and touch somebody.  We win state championships every day.”

We have seen different uniforms, logos and colors in recent years.  What are your thoughts on tradition?
“I’m a Powercat guy.  When you look at tradition, it depends on who you talk to.  The Powercat has been around for maybe 8 or 10 years.  But it has become the Symbol of Central High School, I think an overwhelming symbol, and that’s what I’m about.  The colors of the uniforms, we are maroon, white and silver, but you will see black again.  For the young men who play the game, the guys that are on the field, they enjoy that fresh different look on special occasions.  There is a balance.  I want to meld the ghosts of the past with Wildcats of the future.  I want to be able to honor traditions and honor the ghosts of the past and for them to feel connected, while being a little liberal and dipping my toes into the excitement of things kids like.

What have you learned in two years as the AD, not coaching?
“What has helped me is being on that 5 yard line for the last 25 games.  I have learned more from that 5 yard line watching.  A game is frantic and a kid makes a mistake.  To be able to see, for the first time in 30 years of coaching, the young man come off the field, watch the exchange with the coach, positive or negative, then to watch him go behind the team and being able to see the elation and being able to see the deep sorrow and disappointment when they come off.  I have learned so much more about the kids.”

Any more thoughts to share with the community?
“I am excited and my door is always open like it has been for the community.  We want this to be a community team.  These are our boys, OURS, and I want everybody to feel that way.  Our football program will be about more than just 10 Friday nights.  It will be about character, class, togetherness and family.”
