Trinity Episcopal Overruns the Central Private Rebels

By Patrick Tate, Photo by Selser Photography

The Central Private Rebels ran into a buzz saw by the name of Tipp McKenzie on Friday night in Baker and although they brought the oak trees they could not slow down the running back from Trinity Episcopal High School.  McKenzie touched the football 5 times on Friday night and scored 4 touchdowns as he led the Saints to a 42-14 victory over the Rebels.

On McKenzie's first carry of the night he toted the football 58 yards before being chased down by Zack LeBlanc on the Rebel 5-yard line.  One play later Trevor Shepherd was able to recover a fumble to halt the Saint drive. The CP offense which was able to ground out 256 yards rushing was able to follow the blocking of Rhett Seguin, Orin Byland, Daniel Holloway, Brennan West, Brandon Sullivan and Sy Tate to move the ball out of the shadows of its own end zone before being forced to punt.  After forcing the Saints to punt, the Rebels took to the air where McKenzie demonstrated supreme leaping ability as he went high into the air to spear a pass that he took 54 yards in the opposite direction to open the scoring.  Zach Marshall added his first of six PATs to make the score 7-0.

The Rebels were able to take the kick off and with Dustin Johnson and Troy Lowe  pounding the inside of the Saint defense, advance to the Saint 9 yard line.  Two successive fumbles ended the drive for the Rebels.  After a short run by the Saints, McKenzie was off again, this time for 79 yards and a touchdown.

The Rebel offense was again to move the ball on the ground but an errant pass was picked off by Givonni Dent and 47 yards later the Saints were up 21-0.

The story continued as the Rebels again drove down the field to the Saint 20-yard line but were forced to turn the ball over on downs.  Faced with a fourth down decision the Saints again turned to McKenzie and this time he took a swing pass from Dent and took a 50 yard touchdown and a 28-0 halftime lead.

A 3 yard rush by Dent following a fumble on the second half kickoff made the score 35-0.  The Rebels were then able to turn a long drive into 8 points on their next possession.  A mixture of Johnson’s rushing, passing from Ryan Bowman, and a few penalties on the Saints led to a 2 yard blast into the end zone from Johnson and a 2pt conversion pass from Seth Stevens to Bowman.

McKenzie turned a 4th and six play into a 49 yard touchdown before Bowman hit Lance Wicker for a 43 yard touchdown pass for the final points on the evening.  Johnson led the Rebels carrying the ball 27 times for 150 yards behind an offensive line that Coach Mike Longmire played its best game of the year.  The Rebels return to action in Franklinton on Friday night.

Central Blanks Scotlandville 32-0, Ronnie Devall Honored in Pregame

By Beth Fussell, Stats by Nathan Corley, Photo by Expressions Photography

The Central Wildcats pushed their record to 3-1 last Friday with a decisive 32-0 win over Scotlandville.  The Wildcats logged 290 yards of total offense vs. Scotlandville’s 109 yards.  All of the touchdowns in this game were offensive, though the defense held up their end of the bargain by keeping Scotlandville scoreless throughout.  Cortlan Hutchinson led the team in rushing yards with 109 to his name, and the defense worked as a unit to rack up 4 sacks and 36 tackles.

Also at Friday’s game was Mr. Ronnie Devall.  The retired Assistant Superintendent, principal, teacher, and coach was honored during the pregame show for his years of service to Central schools.  His dedication to the children of Central as well as to the new Central Community School System will be remembered and appreciated for a very long time.

Come see the Wildcats play Catholic at Memorial Stadium this Friday at 7.

Community Pep Rally Tonight in Wildcat Stadium

By Beth Fussell

The 3-1 Central Wildcats will face the Catholic High Bears, also 3-1, this Friday night at 7 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.  The Catholic game has traditionally been an important one to the Wildcats, as the Bears tend to bring stiff competition every year.  Last year brought a big loss for Catholic, as Central piled on the points for the victory.  The Bears are looking to make up for that loss with a statement win on Friday.  To get pumped up for the game, the Central Men’s Club is throwing a community-wide pep rally in Wildcat Stadium at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday).  Everyone is invited to come get ready for what is sure to be a big game tomorrow.  Fans are asked to wear white to the game itself for a whiteout.  White game day shirts are available at Central High School and will also be sold at the pep rally.

CMS Football Update

Submitted by John Kennedy

Central Middle School’s 8th grade team lost to East Feliciana Tuesday night 34-22. Turnovers inside the 10 yardline for the second week stopped the Wildcats again. After E.F. scored on their opening drive, the Wildcats ran 9 offensive plays to get to the 10, when a fumbled pitch stopped the drive. Four plays later the Tigers scored to go ahead 14-0. It remained that scored until the 2nd half when the Wildcats opened up their scoring by a 12 yard run by Justin Vessel early in the 3rd quarter. The extra point run was stopped short. Another touchdown run of 38 yards by Kevin Henry and a touchdown recovery in the endzone by Rodney Johnson was not enough to stop the athletic East Feliciana team from taking charge of the game late in the 4th. The offense was powered by big blocks from Cameron Hooper, Brett Skinner, Aubrey Mitchell and Brennon Fontenot. The defense held on all night with big stops by Matt Harris, Dylan Marson, Shane Story and Jerimiah Mayes.
Next week the 8th graders open their home schedule Tuesday night at 5:30 vs. Denham Springs Jr. High.

Wildcats Win Homecoming Game 58-6, Taylor Padgett Crowned Queen

By Beth Fussell, Stats by Nathan Corley

At Friday’s Homecoming game, the CHS Homecoming Court was introduced before the game and during halftime.  At halftime, the Homecoming Queen was crowned. Taylor Padgett, a senior and co-captain of the CHS volleyball team, won the honor.  Homecoming Court also included Megan Smith, Jaci Ashford, Cassandra Soniat, Alexandra Burns, Rachel Raborn, Carissa Burch, Bridget Lieux, Stephanie Calamia, Hannah Ashford, Breigh Allen, Bobbie Broome, Tori Evans, Emily Shelton, and Alicen Lieux.

The Central Wildcats had a strong showing in their Homecoming game against Sarah Reed last Friday night.  Cortlan Hutchinson scored the first touchdown of the night halfway through the first quarter, and several of his team members followed suit, racking up a total of 51 points in the first half of the game.

During halftime, the coaches of both teams agreed to go to running time for the second half, meaning that the clock does not stop except for time outs.  The second half of the game brought less action from the offense.  Sarah Reed put up 6 points in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard fumble return, and Central answered a few minutes later when Brett Courville ran in for the final score of the night, leaving the game at 58-6.  Matthew Thibodeaux kicked 6 extra points during the game.

Central’s defense played hard throughout the night, as Sarah Reed had possession for the majority of the game.  Austin Watts and J.R. Richardson were stand outs on the defensive side, with 1 touchdown each.  Watts also ran the ball in after Central’s second touchdown for a successful 2-point conversion.  The Wildcats play again at home this Friday night at 7 p.m. vs Scotlandville.
