Neutral Grounds

Submitted by Angie Kirby
Shane Kirby of Clinton Louisiana packed up his two sons Taft, age 14 (top), and Tate, age 12 (bottom), and headed out for opening weekend of the youth turkey hunt. They left Saturday morning and around mid-day Shane and the boys struck a gobble.  They called the bird in and neither of the boys could get a shot. Mid – day on Sunday they returned to the same spot and called the old bird up again.  This time the old tom strutted in to the decoy at 10yards. Taft, the older son, had a clean shot of the bird, but chose to let his little brother Tate take a shot at this bird.  Tate claimed this huge Tom with his 12 gauge in St. Martin Parish. Tate’s turkey was 20pounds with a 10 inch beard, 1 1/2 spurs.

The following weekend the Kirby's headed out to the woods for round two to talk to some birds. After several encounters Saturday, they were able roost a turkey for their Sunday morning hunt.  At daybreak this turkey flew straight down out the tree to the decoy.  This was the opportunity that Taft was hoping for.  While Shane called softly to this bird, Tate sat frozen with excitement watching as Taft slowly raised his shotgun up at the turkey. Taft took the shot from 15 yards.  Taft’s tom was 18 pounds with 10 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs taken also in St. Martin Parish.

“I'm blessed with another successful year for both of my boys each getting a bird”, said Shane. With two rambunctious boys, even a trip to the grocery store can be a challenge, as they typically display "brotherly love".  So, when Shane leaves to take them in the woods together, it seems they would need a referee. “I’m always caught off guard when they get home and I listen to their stories, and I’m amazed at the generosity, and discipline these two boys seem to find for each other when it comes to hunting,” said Angie (the mother of these two boys).

"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."

Wildcat Bowling Heads to Playoffs this Monday

After starting the season 0-4, the Central High Bowling Team geared up for an amazing 8-game winning streak, putting them third in the 5A District and earning them a spot in the playoffs.  The #7 Seed Wildcats will bowl against The Runnels School in Round 1 this Monday, March 26 at 1:15 PM at All Star Lanes.  Central is favored to win the match, but they would love our community’s support at the game.  Should the Wildcats win in Round 1, they will advance to Round 2 of the playoffs, which will begin at 3:15 PM, also at All Star Lanes.  Central will face the winner of Catholic High’s Round 1 game.  Catholic is seeded at #2, so chances look good for a Central-Catholic rematch.  Central gave Catholic their only loss of the season, so that would be a great game to watch.
If the Wildcats win their games in Round 1 and Round 2, they will move on to the next week of the playoffs.  Should they lose in Round 2, Central will bowl on Tuesday in the Loser’s Bracket and will fight for their chance to advance to the next week.
Central finished with an 8 match winning streak this season by easily defeating Woodlawn (2-10) and Baton Rouge High (1-11) in their last two matches.  Both scores were 25-2.  New Central High Bowling records set by this year's squad include:  Longest Winning Streak – Currently at 8;  Most Wins In A Season – 8;  Team High Series – 3114;  High Boys Average – Jacob Garretson (1st) – 189.00 & Bryan Waites (2nd) – 183.88.

Lacrosse Comes to Central!

“What’s Lacrosse?” you may wonder.  Lacrosse has its origins as a Native American sport, played for the glory and honor of the tribe.  It is played mostly in the U.S. and Canada.  A small hard rubber ball and a stick, called a “crosse” or “lacrosse” stick, are the only equipment required.  The lacrosse stick has a small net on its top end, used to capture the ball and then throw it.  Scores occur when the ball is thrown into the opponent’s goal, much like hockey or soccer, using the stick to pass, catch, and carry it.  Defensively, naturally, the goal is to prevent such scoring through the use of stick checking and body contact.  Due to this, helmets and padding are required safety equipment.
Coach Jeff Jones was initially approached by Cole Devillier and Holden Keating about sponsoring a lacrosse team.  “I’d never heard of lacrosse,” Coach Jones said with a smile, “I’m a former basketball coach!”  Seeing how motivated the students were, Coach polled students during Club Day, and 50 students expressed interest.  “We ended up with 17 students on the team,” said Coach.
During one of their first practices, 2 men stopped by and asked what they were doing.  When informed, they enthusiastically offered to help coach.  Thus Central gained the expertise of Coach Graham Bolton and Coach Jeff King, who have been “fantastic!” according to Coach Jones.  They have volunteered their expertise and experience to get Central’s team up and running.
The Wildcats held their first scrimmage last Saturday against Dutchtown.  Coach Jones shared, “We had LOTS of fans out there, and everyone had a great time.”  Channel 9 News even came out and filmed the game.   Lacrosse is a fast-paced, action filled game that is really exciting to watch.  Central, Dutchtown and Catholic are working to form a local league.   Since it is still in the developmental stages at Central, the Wildcats will hold only 2 more events – one in Mandeville, and one in Covington.  It would be great if fans could travel to support these enthusiastic players.  Central will return next year with most of its players, so great improvements are expected.
