Central Private Takes 2 out of 3 in District Opener

 Ryan Young, Senior Shortstop

Article Submitted by Jason Kinchen

Game 1
Chase Martin 4 innings, 6 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 BB and 1K.
Grant Wideman 3 inning, 3 hits, 1 earned run and 3 K's
Brennan Fucich 2-4
Bowman 1-1 with an RBI
5-4 Loss in 8 innings
Martin had his back up against the wall to start the game with a 3 run spot in the 1st. It was good to see him battle with adversity. It was the first time all season he hasn't been in complete control. It was a good learning experience for him. He wasn't getting the first pitch strikes over like he had in the past 3 outings. However, he found his groove and settled in and gave the team a chance to win. Offensively, we left several runners on base and couldn't come through with the clutch hit. Grant Wideman came in relief and pitched lights out giving our team a chance to stay in the game. Good to have a guy that can come in and shut the door and work quick. In the bottom of the last inning, with a runner at 1st, we botched a tailor made double play that put our backs against the wall.  Silliman ended up winning the game. It was a loss that I will take full responsibility for.

Game 2
Brennan Fucich 7 innings, 6 hits 3 earned runs, 2 BB and 9 Ks
Ryan Young 2-3 RBI
Seth steven 1-2 with a triple and 2 RBIs
Jonathan Nicosia 1-2 with a home run and  2 RBIs
7-3 WIN
Sticks woke up mid-way through the game giving Fucich a chance to earn the W. Brennan was in control from start til finish.  When he throws his 3 pitches for strikes, he is tough to beat. Stevens triple and Nicosia's bomb gave our hitters the boost that was needed.

Game 3
Blake Chelette 4 1/3 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 4 BB and 4 Ks
Grant Wideman 2 2/3 innings, 1 hit and 2 K's
Hunter Wallace 2-3
Ryan Bowman 1-2 with an RBI
4-2 WIN
Chelette is a battler and gives it his best each time he takes the mound. He was up and down, in and out of the zone for the majority of the night but his stuff was good enough to keep the hitters guessing. I want to see him improve on his command the next outing he has. Grant Wideman came in and again shut the door on their hitters by working quick and filling the mitt up with strikes. He was a key part to us winning the series versus Silliman.

Pitching and Hitting Fuel Central Private

Submitted by Roger W. Martin
Central Private had only two games this past week due to Trinity canceling 2 games and Copiah canceling 1 game.
In game one, Chase Martin threw a complete game (5 innings due to run rule) no hitter. The Rebels offense was powered by 2 home runs by Seth Stevens and 1 home run by Brad Miller as the Rebels beat Oak Forest 11 – 0.
In game two Brennan Fucich pitched a strong 4 innings to keep Oak Forest batters at bay. Grant Wideman closed the game out to preserve the 9 – 2 win over Oak Forest.
Coach Jason Kinchen had this to say about last weeks games:  Chase Martin 5 innings pitched 0 hits 11 strike outs. Great to see Chase have another dominating outing. He started off shaky the first couple of batters, but made the adjustments that were needed. Chase's off speed pitches have really kept hitters off balance and guessing. Seth Stevens went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI's. Seth has been swinging the bat hot as of late. He is starting to realize that he doesn't have to over swing to be a complete hitter. Brad Miller was 2 for 3 with a home run and 3 RBI's. Miller has been steady all year with the stick. I expect him to continue swinging it with confidence
In game 2, Brennan Fucich 4 innings pitched 3 hits 7 strike outs. Fucich threw a good game by establishing his fast ball early then moving to his off speed pitches. Brennan likes to work fast which is good for our defense . Keeps em on their toes. Brennan Fucich was 2 for 2 with a double and with 1 RBI. Great to see Fucich come alive with the stick. He has it in him to be a solid hitter in the middle of our line up. Jonathan Nicosia was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI's. After moving Nicosia down in the line up, he has been having quality at bats. He missed most of last season due to injury, so it is good to see him healthy and producing for the team.

Rebels Reach the MAIS Overall Final Four

Above:  Piers Carroll (#35) tips off against Jackson Prep

Submitted by Central Private School
The Central Private Varsity boys wrapped up their basketball season last Friday night, advancing as far as the MAIS Overall Championships Final 4. This is the second farthest the school has advanced since it became a member of the MAIS. The Rebels finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 32-8.
The Rebels started the month long play-off schedule by winning the MAIS 6-AA District Championship, the school’s second time in as many years.
Returning junior shooting guard Simpson Anderson responded to the back- to-back district championship by saying, “Winning the district twice was not our goal, but it is a good feeling.”
By winning the district, the boys qualified for the South State AA Tournament. CPS easily won its first elimination game over Sylva Bay Academy of Bay Springs, MS, 69-35.
The Rebels won their second round game over Trinity Episcopal School of Natchez, MS, in overtime, outscoring Trinity 18-2 in overtime.  CPS went on to win the game 70-54.
“We got hot at the right time,” said senior shooting guard Lance Wicker; he finished the game with 19 points.
With the win the Rebels advanced to the South AA Championship Tournament where they fell short against Brookhaven Academy of Brookhaven, MS, 63-49. CPS advanced to the MAIS Class AA State Tournament as a #2 seed from South AA. Simpson Anderson, Piers Carroll, and Alex Overs all received All-South State honors.
The team then traveled five and a half hours north to Grenada, MS, for the MAIS Class AA State Tournament. In a first round elimination game the Rebels beat Immanuel Christian School of Steens, MS, by the score of 71- 57.
Head Coach Henry Gantz was very pleased with his team’s performance in the opening round of state: “We had four guys score double digits; when we play that balanced on offense, it’s pretty tough to beat us.” Senior All Star point guard Alex Overs finished the night with 19 points and 7 assists.
CPS then advanced to unfamiliar territory, the AA State Semifinals. Lack of experience and foul trouble plagued the Rebels late in the 4th quarter and the Rebels came up short after leading 4 quarters of the game. The Rebels lost the game to Marshall Academy (Holly Springs, MS) by a final score of 63-55 in a defensive battle. Marshall would go on to win its second straight state championship.
The loss put CPS in a go-home consolation game; the winner would advance to the MAIS Overall Championship. The MAIS Overall Tournament combines all classes to have 1 overall champion of all teams.  The Rebels had not advanced to the Overall’s since 2001. The pressure did not faze CPS as they cruised past district rival Bowling Green School (Franklinton, LA) 61-34. Carroll and Overs were named to the All-State Team.
The Rebels advanced as the #3 seed from class AA, where in first round action they faced AAA East Rankin Academy of Pelahatchie, MS. CPS knew in this tournament that every game was a go-home game. “Our goal was to win the Overall, and it’s all we talked about all year,” said Overs.
CPS showed its nerves in the first quarter against ERA by starting on the wrong end of a 12-0 run. Simpson Anderson would, however, find his touch by hitting on three straight 3-point attempts. The junior finished the season by hitting exactly one hundred 3’s. The Rebels won a tough game over a AAA power by the score of 62-56.
Second round action had CPS facing the Class A champions, Tri-County Academy of Flora, MS.  The Rebels proved too powerful for the state champs and won the game 76-43. Anderson again led the way for the Rebels with 21.
The win placed CPS in its second biggest game in school history. Only one CPS team had ever advanced to this point.  Waiting on CPS was AAA state champs Jackson Preparatory School (Jackson, MS). Jackson Prep entered the contest with a record of 40-1 and were the heavy favorites, playing only 15 miles from their own campus at the Overall Tournament, which was held at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.
The CPS faithful showed their support in a major way for the boys, and the team got its first game on a grand stage. Well over 1,000 fans were in attendance to see the two teams. The game was filled with slam dunks and great basketball.
CPS trailed Jackson Prep by 12 at halftime, but with the hands of fan support and grit the Rebels battled their way back and slowly cut the Prep lead down to only 6 at the end of three quarters. With a little over 4:00 left in the 4th quarter, CPS cut the lead to only two. Prep called a time out to regroup; the golden ball was in sight for the Rebels for the first time in school history. Prep maintained the ball for much of the remainder of the game and went on to hit 8 straight free throws to beat CPS 53-43. Overs was named to the All-Overall Team.
The Rebels racked up on awards on the way to this point. Mitch Van Asten was named to the All-District team along with Overs, Carroll, and Anderson. Overs and Carroll received senior All Star honors and will  compete this weekend in the MAIS State All-Star Basketball game in Jackson, MS.
Gantz said about his players and team, “We have a good thing going. Overs will more than likely sign D-1 soon, and Carroll is highly sought after among D-3 colleges. Anderson is a highly recruited D-1 prospect and he is only a junior; he had scouts from several colleges come to our gym this year.”
Gantz was also named MAIS All-Star Coach; he will have the honor of coaching Carroll and Overs in one more game.
The basketball team would like to thank its fans, its amazing headmaster, the CPS cheerleaders and their sponsor, the CPS Board of Directors and CP Athletic Club, and the basketball staff that worked endless hours to achieve the current success the program has enjoyed.

Central Bowling Upsets Undefeated Catholic High

Central High Varsity Bowling (6-4) proved Monday (3-5-12) that they have arrived and can bowl with the best teams around.  Not only did the Wildcats up their winning streak to 6 matches, but they upset the previously undefeated Catholic High Bears (8-1); the first time in Central’s bowling program history that they have pulled off a victory against Catholic.

Game 1 started off like most of the matches between Catholic and Central, with Catholic taking a commanding lead.  Catholic would take an early 6-2 advantage and lead Total Pins by 76.  Catholic’s strong bowling was led by Curtis Westmoland with a 215 and Mike Zielewski with a 186.  Central was led by Team Captain Bryan Waites (Junior) with a 219, but it would take more than just one bowler to get back into the match.  Fortunately, Game 2 saw the Wildcats put together one of the most balanced games of the season en route to their 3rd high game series of the season with a 1006.  The Wildcats were once again led by Waites (193), followed by Alex David (Junior) with a 191, Sean Murphy (Sophomore) with a 185, Kevin Kennedy (Sophomore) with a 175 and Jacob Garretson (Freshman) with a 175.  Central would ride the good scores to a 6-2 Game 2 finish.  Catholic’s Team Captain would do his best to keep the match close with Westmoland rolling a 248.  Going into the final game the score couldn’t have been any closer, with the score tied up at 8-8 and Catholic up only 3 pins overall.

A month earlier Catholic and Central were tied 8-8 after 2 games and Catholic ran away with the third game, winning the match 18-9.  But once again, this is different Wildcat team than one that bowled Catholic a month ago.  Central came out swinging in Game 3 and dominated Catholic throughout the final game.  Garretson led the Wildcat attack with a 232, with Waites adding a 188 and Murphy chipping in a 185.  In the end, the Wildcats would win the match by the final score of 17-10 and 2884 to 2788 in Total Pins.  Overall, Central was led by Waites with a 600 series (his 2nd straight 600+ series), Garretson with a 545, Murphy added a 527 (his 3rd straight 500+ series) and Kennedy finished with a 500 (his first 500 series ever).

Central’s coaches have been looking forward to this match for awhile and called it Central’s match of the year.  And judging by the fan support the Wildcats received from parents, students and friends cheering the team on, it must have been a big match!  The Wildcats took Catholic’s best punch and responded tremendously.  In fact, Catholic’s 2788 team series was a season high for the Bears and Central topped that by almost 100 pins.  Central is now set up to receive a good playoff seed if they are able to defeat Woodlawn (1-8) and Baton Rouge High (1-7) in the final two matches of the season.  Central has defeated both schools already this season.  Central goes for 7 in-a-row against Woodlawn on Thursday (3-8-12) at All Star Lanes (3:20pm).

Wildcat Bowling Keeps on Rolling Against Scotlandville

After a two week layoff, the LHSAA Bowling Season got its 2nd half underway.  Central High Varsity Bowling (4-4) picked up where they left off at the end of the 1st half by continuing their good bowling on Wednesday (2-29-12).  Back in January, Scotlandville defeated Central 20-7, but on Wednesday the Wildcats returned the whipping by defeating Scotlandville (4-3) 20-7, upping the Wildcats winning streak to 4.

All in all, Central had the match wrapped up from the beginning.  In Games 1 & 2 Central stormed out to match ending 14-2 lead and led Total Pins by 109.  Central would use a season high 976 series in Game 1 to take a commanding lead in the match.  The Wildcats would also get a huge boost from new comer Alex David (Junior).  Bowling in his first match of the season, David bowled a 204 and 188 in the first two games and showed he’ll be a valuable arm in Central’s quest to make a deep run in the State Playoffs that start the last week of March.  David wasn’t the only Wildcat bowling strong in Games 1 & 2.  In the 1st game Central was led by Jacob Garretson (Freshman) with a 215 and Team Captain Bryan Waites (Junior) chipped in with a 193.  The 2nd game saw a more balanced attack from the Wildcats with games ranging from 154 to 188.

Knowing the Wildcats could not be beaten; Central went into cruise control for Game 3 and finished strong with a season high series of 2817.  Game 3 was led by Sean Murphy (Sophomore) with a 212 (his 1st 200 game of the season) and Waites with a 200.  Scotlandville was led by their anchor bowler Deontrae Taylor with a 207 game, John Thomas with a 512 series and Donzell Dukes bowling 75 pins over average.  For the 3rd straight match the Wildcats were led by Waites with a 558 series, followed by  Garretson with a 553, Murphy with a personal season high 515 (and led the Wildcats with 71 pins over average), David with a 498 and Kevin Murphy (Sophomore) with a 449.

Up next Central will try to avenge another previous loss when they bowl Zachary (3-4) on Thursday (3-1-12) at All Star Lanes (3:20pm).  Central looks for a season high 5 game winning streak and get above .500 for the first time all season.

Central Bowling Steamrolls Zachary, Sets School Record

Submitted by Coach Godley

After making short work of Scotlandville a day earlier, Central High Varsity Bowling (5-4) really turned it up a notch on Thursday (3-1-12) at All Star Lanes.  Central also upped their winning streak to 5 matches after dominating Zachary High (3-5) 25-2, erasing an earlier season loss to the Broncos.

Just like the day before, Central had the match wrapped up after 2 games.  After 2 games Central had a dominant lead over Zachary 15-1 and by almost 500 pins.  In Game 1, Central came out on fire by posting a season high game of 1043 to Zachary’s 733.  Bryan Waites (Team Captain/Junior) led the Wildcats with a 214, followed by Jacob Garretson (Freshman) with a 189, Sean Murphy (Sophomore) with a 183 and Kevin Kennedy (Sophomore) with a 179.  But Game 1 was only the beginning of the fireworks.  In Game 2, Central set another season high game, this time with a 1098.  The 1098 game is the 2nd highest game ever thrown by a Wildcat team, falling just short of the 1105 game shot by the 2007 Central team.  The newest Wildcat, Alex David (Junior), paced the team by bowling a 244, followed by Garretson’s 238, Murphy’s 200 and Waites’ 197.

The Wildcats didn’t let up the third game.  Garretson rolled a 215 and Waites was right behind with a 191.  Once Central was done putting on a show (for the large crowd of Wildcat parents, students and friends in attendance) they were the new CHS Bowling team series record holders.  The previous Central High record for a 3-game series was 2964, thrown last year by the 2011 Wildcat team.  On Thursday, Central posted a 3114 series, blowing the previous record out of the water!  In fact, four Wildcats had season high series and were led by Garretson with a 642.  The other Wildcats putting up impressive numbers were Waites with a 602, Murphy with a 561 and David with a 549.

Central’s 5 match winning streak has vaulted the Wildcats into 3rd Place (after a 0-4 start) in the 5A District behind bowling powerhouses Catholic High (8-0) and Denham Springs (7-2).  Central needs to win their last three matches to earn a high playoff seed and that begins with Catholic on Monday (3-5-12) at All Star Lanes (3:20pm).  Catholic has never lost a match to Central and won a close match earlier this season 18-9 (Central and Catholic were tied after 2 games in that match).  But this is a much improved Wildcat team, more confident team and they are clicking on all cylinders.   Without a doubt, this is Central’s match of the year and look forward to putting on another show for all the Wildcat fans in attendance.   Central’s coaches ask all parents, students and friends to come out to All Star Lanes Monday at 3:20pm and cheer their team to victory!
