Central Private Looks Strong in Preseason Tournament

Submitted by Roger W. Martin

Central Private looks to make a little noise this season with a maturing class made up mostly of 6 seniors and 11 juniors.  The seniors on this team are motivated and determined to make this a special year for coach Kinchen and the Rebel baseball program.  The Rebels got off on the right foot by playing 3 divisional foes in a preseason tournament at Bowling Green this past week.  With a quality pitching staff and an extremely stingy defense, the Rebels walked through the three game set in impressive fashion. In the first game, Central Private played the host team, Bowling Green.  The Rebel bats looked to be in mid-season form recording 12 runs while the pitching staff and defense held Buccaneers to 2 runs.  Chase Martin, Hunter Wallace and Ryan Young combined for the 5 inning decision on the mound allowing only 3 hits with 0 walks.  In game 2 the Rebels faced off with defending state champions Centreville Academy in a 7 – 0 game.  Pitchers Grant Wideman, Jonathan Nicosia, and Seth Stevens combined for a 4 K, 2 hit game that was complimented with a solid hitting performance by the Rebels as they faced several of the Tigers top pitchers.  In game 3 Central Private played a new team in their district, Oak Forest Academy.  Oak Forest is the defending state champions from class 3A, giving the Rebels district two defending state champions going into this season.  The Rebels led by the pitching of Brennan Fucich, Blake Chelette and Brad Miller held on to take a 9 – 2 decision giving up only four hits.
The Rebels head coach, Jason Kinchen had this to say about the team heading into the 2012 season.  “The team put in a lot of work this off-season and has the right mind-set of what lies ahead of them.  I feel that we are a veteran team with lots of experience under our belt.  A lot of these guys have been with me a while and know my system like the back of their hand.  Our strong points this season will be solid defense and depth in our pitching staff. If our hitting comes alive like we know it will, we should be tough to beat.  Centreville will be the team to beat in our district being that they have not lost anyone from last year. There are several players to watch on our team this year and all are committed to the idea of team.  Come out and support us this year.   We will be fun to watch.”

Central Bowling Cruises Against Baton Rouge High

Submitted by Coach Godley

On Thursday (2-9-12), Central High Varsity Bowling (2-4) enjoyed their easiest match of the season, defeating Baton Rouge High (1-4) 25-2 and 2529-1615 in Total Pins.  The Wildcats were on cruise control the entire match with a very balanced attack, and Central’s 1-2 Punch of Bryan Waites (Junior) and Jacob Garretson (Freshman) have found two improved arms in Kevin Kennedy (Sophomore) and Sean Murphy (Sophomore).

Central ended the match early by completely dominating Games 1 & 2.  When the dust settled after 2 games, the Wildcats had swept all the points and led the match 16-0 and Total Pins by over 600 pins.  In fact, the only exciting point to be had was from the #1 position in the line-up.  Jonathan Coleman (Freshman) had to mark in the 10th and get 8 pins in Game 2 to win his match and that’s exactly what he did, winning his match by 1 pin!  Game 3 wasn’t swept by Central, but they put together one of their best team games of the season.  In the final game, Waites led the Wildcats with a 242 game and Garretson followed with a 223.  Central would finish the match by beating Baton Rouge High by over 900 pins.

Before the match began, Coach Gardner and Coach Godley announced that Bryan Waites is this year’s Team Captain.  Right on cue, Waites bowled the match like a Captain and led the Wildcats in series (564) and high game (242).  Garretson bowled a 545 series with a 223.  Central’s two most improved arms continued to bowl above average.  Murphy bowled 51 pins over average and Kennedy topped that by bowling 65 pins over average.  Central’s next match is Thursday (2-16-12) at All Star Lanes (3:20pm) against Denham Springs (4-1), whom Central has never defeated in a match 6 on 6 (Central defeated Denham by forfeit in last year’s state playoffs).  Denham escaped with a 17-10 victory over Central earlier this season and Central is determined to increase their winning streak to 3.

Central Private Wins District Championship

The Central Private Rebels took home the 6AA District Title last weekend when they won a 33-23 game against Bowling Green.  The victory came after an impressive 107-54 win Friday night over Oak Forest.  Simpson Anderson put up 14 points over the Bowling Green Buccaneers.  Piers Carroll and Alex Overs were big contributors with 8 points and 7 points, respectively.  Mitch Van Asten and Lance Wicker also put up points on the Buccaneers.  Alex Overs and Austin Pierce led the team in assists, with Luke Fryoux, Lance Wicker, and Simpson Anderson adding to that list.
Central Private is currently 27-5 for the season, but it’s not over yet.  The team plays tonight at 7:45 in Mendenhall, Mississippi.  Should they win that game, they will play Friday night at 6, and if all goes well, they will close out the weekend with a Saturday game at 7:15 PM.  Good luck to the Rebels, and congratulations!

Central High Bowlers and LSU Players Take it to the Lanes

Submitted by Coach Godley
Central High Varsity Bowling got huge surprise this past Friday (2-10-12) from their bowling coaches, Mike Gardner and Phil Godley, when the team showed up to bowl a scrimmage and discovered the opposing team would consist of starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger and four other LSU Football players!
Once they recovered from the initial shock, the Wildcats were more than ready to roll with the big boys of LSU.  Unfortunately, one Tiger wasn’t able to join his fellow LSU teammates due to an illness, but a quick substitution by Mettenberger almost tipped the match in LSU Football’s favor.  He recruited Louisiana Youth Female Bowler of the Year and High School All American, Kay Rawls, who currently is a leading member of the Louisiana Tech University Women’s Bowling team. Rawls is also a former Central Wildcat Bowling Team Captain. The other Tigers on hand to bowl were Branch Kampe (LB), Gabriel Langlois (OL), Connor Neighbors (FB) and Luke Muncie (LB).
In Game 1, Mettenberger and Rawls would be the only two bowlers to score points against the Wildcats.  Central took control of the match with a 6-2 start and 923 to 741 in total pins.  Rawls would lead Team LSU with a 189 game and Mettenberger was right behind her with a 154.  Central High responded with Kevin Kennedy (Sophomore) leading with a 170, Alex David (Junior) with a 161. Lindsey Giacone (Senior) rolled a 148.  Game 2 was a different story though.  With their competitive juices flowing, Team LSU came out on fire and steam rolled Central 7-1 and 962 to 726 in total pins.  Rawls was once again the high scorer on Team LSU with a 242. Mettenberger rolled a 189, Muncie chipped in with a 163, and bowling with his left hand (due to breaking his right hand two weeks ago) Neighbors rolled his highest game of the day with a 123.  Central’s high game came from David, 150.  Going into the final game, LSU Football was leading Central 9-7 and 1703 to 1649 in total pins.
Central High got back to business and quickly took care of the match.  The Wildcats hemmed up the match with a season high game series of 958 to LSU Football’s 856 and won 5 of the 8 game points in Game 3.  The Wildcats were led by Team Captain Bryan Waites (Junior) with a 236 (which included six strikes in-a-row), Jacob Garretson (Freshman) with a 190, Kennedy rolling a 156, and Sean Murphy (Sophomore) with a 147.  Rawls proved to be a great substitution because she would once again show the LSU boys how to bowl rolling a 217. Kampe followed with a 155.  Once it was all said and done, Central High came out victorious 15-12 and 2607 to 2559 in total pins.  The Wildcats were led by Waites with a 529 (236 game) and Garretson had a 476 (190 game).  Also noteworthy was Kennedy’s 450 (170 game) and David’s 444 (161 game).  Rawls, bowling for Team LSU, topped everyone with a 648 series (242 game) and Mettenberger was second high on Team LSU with a 481 series (189 game).
Central Coaches Godley and Gardner would like to thank the LSU Tigers for taking the time to scrimmage against Central High.  It will be a day that Central High’s bowlers, coaches, parents, and fans will remember forever – THE DAY CENTRAL HIGH BEAT LSU!
