Central Police Department Now Radar Certified

City of Central Police Chief Doug Browning was excited to announce that all of the officers in the CPD are now radar certified.  This means they have taken all of the necessary instruction and passed a very strict test.  The instruction involved not just training on the apparatus but training the mind and eye to work together to be able to estimate the speed of an oncoming vehicle, including while in a vehicle in motion.  This is excellent news for Central.  "We now have the means to prosecute violators," Chief Browning stated. "We worked it out with the D.A.'s office.  We've already had our first set of cases go through."
The next goal for the CPD is to become laser radar certified.  The laser apparatus allows officers to check the speed on specific cars even if they are among a group of vehicles.  "It works with Doppler technology.  We have 1 laser unit and 3 car mounted units in the department," Chief shared.  This certification should be complete within the next 2 weeks.  Chief Browning was firm when he stated decisively, "Everyone has to understand: Do Not Speed!"

EBRSO Solves Burglary/Shooting

Returning home on December 22, the resident of a home on Deer Creek just outside of Central on Hwy 64, found two black males wearing masks standing in the bedroom door, one pointing a gun.  The masked burglar holding the gun ordered the victim not make any noise and to do what he was told.  The victim ran out of the back door and jumped off the deck, fleeing from the residence.  The masked burglar chased the victim and fired up to six shots, missing the victim.  The suspects then fled to the back of the subdivision.
In February, an EBRSO Detective arrested a Pride resident on another burglary and that suspect offered information on the December 22nd incident.  As a result of the tip, several photo lineups, and further investigation by EBRSO, on March 8 Robert Neff was apprehended and on April 10 Johnny Lee Shelmire “LJ” Mitchell was apprehended.  Both were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for Aggravated Burglary and Attempted First Degree Murder.

EBRSO Solves Theft in 48 Hours

A $1,500 utility trailer was stolen from 15855 Greenwell Springs Road early in the morning on April 2nd.  Less than 48 hours later Dalin Ardoin of Weyanoke, LA was under arrest for possessing that same trailer.  EBRSO Lt. Jared Ruiz was briefed on the theft at the 5PM shift change on April 4th and alertly identified the suspected truck, identified from security camera footage at the point of the theft, and the trailer a little after midnight on Greenwell Springs near Hooper.

Lt. Ruiz, also noting that the trailer had no license plate, made the traffic stop, confirmed the VIN of the trailer and made the arrest.  The trailer’s rims had been freshly painted black and black paint was sprayed over the VIN to conceal the identity of the trailer.  Two empty cans of black spray paint were in plain view in the back of the suspect’s pickup truck.  Thanks to EBRSO and to Lt. Ruiz for solving this theft in under 48 hours.

House Fire in Evergreen Hills

Submitted by Central Fire Department

A neighbor with a good eye saved a home in Central tonight. On 3-27-13 at 4:30pm the Central Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire at 5931 Bristle Cone Ct.  called in by a neighbor who saw smoke coming from the roof of a home with the owner not there. Upon our arrival we found smoke coming out the attic. We made our way in the home and found that the hot water heater was on fire and had just fallen from the attic to a bathroom on the first floor. We extinguished the fire with very little water and most of the smoke was in the attic and not in the home.  We were able to save this home because the smoke was reported early by a neighbor and a quick response by firefighters. Baton Rouge fire assisted as a rapid intervention crew.
