Crime Information in Central

CentralSpeaks.com has gotten in touch with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office to ask about public bulletins for the types of thefts and burglaries that have been happening around Central.  The Sheriff's Office usually only releases public bulletins for crimes like commercial robberies and shootings.  However, they are willing to provide information about specific incidents on a case by case basis.  So, if you have heard about a crime in Central and would like more information, send an email to editor@centralspeaks.com.  We will contact the Sheriff's Office that day and post any details we receive as soon as we receive the information.

We need to make sure that home burglaries that are “normal” in baton rouge are in fact not tolerated in Central City. If you see a van or truck pull up to your neighbor’s house, then by all means go check it out. It is probably nothing criminal, but I am sure your neighbor will not mind you checking.

The EBRSO is not set up to distribute that level of detailed press releases. Only “major” itmes will get press releases. However, we do have a working relationship with their Public Information Officer and if I send her a specific inquiry she will let us know all the can be released about the incident, so e-mail me.

As to the last post, be careful when you “go check it out” that you don’t actually confront a criminal. Better to watch from a distance until you can figure out whether there is a problem, then call the law if needed.

I can assure you, if I go check it out, Mr. Ruger or Mr. Colt will be with me. Thats one of the things I’m concerned about out here. Most households are heavily armed and someone is going to get hurt. As I said on a previous post, the bulk of these are being committed by carrer criminals according to a detective I know. Frequently, they know just who to look for depending on the area. People need to be aware that you may be dealing with someone that has done this many times and is not afraid to get into a confrontation. Expect the worst and if you have any doubt about your ability to handle until police arive, wait and let them handle.

The thing that everyone should do is try to pay a little more attention to your surroundings at all times. Not only could this possibly prevent some crimes, but car accidents. Most people have a set pattern and daily routine that they go on with everyday. It only takes a second to look around and see something that is out of place. For instance, right after Gustav hit, I noticed a strange vehicle in my neighbor’s driveway across the street. I knew my neighbor was not at home, her car had not been there for several days. I took note of the license plate number and informed the police, they ran the plate and told me that is was a relative. Anyone can report suspicious activity, but in order to see it you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. With the economic problems facing so many in this day in age, you can probably look for more theft to take place. Pay attention people! Know that I am looking out for not only myself, but those around me.

We must not be blind to the fact that criminals are targeting Central because the reward v risk is high. EBRSO is stretched thin and are not able to provide the proactive patrols that can deter these types of crime. Since no one is realistically addressing the issue of police coverage in Central, we must all be vigilant for each other.

Mike – I would urge everyone to not get directly involved unless absolutely necessary for the protection of life. Someone else’s property is not worth injury or death. Be a good witness, record license plates and descriptions but leave the confrontations to the professionals and call the police. It’s what we train for. A lot of criminals these days have no qualms about engaging law enforcement, they will not think twice about engaging a citizen. I’m sure your neightbor would rather lose his weedeater than a good neighbor.
